Kotoko coach explains Acheampong's sale to Atletico

Asante Kotoko coach Mas-Ud Dramani has explained the decision to sell striker Ben Acheampong despite being part of the side’s Champions League squad.

The 22-year-old will join Angolan club Petro Atletico this month haven spent just a season with the Ghanaian champions.

Acheampong however leaves after being added to the list of 26-players to be registered by Kotoko for next season’s CAF Champions League.

But coach Dramani says he wasn’t aware of Atletico’s interest by the time he was compiling his squad for Africa.

“I thought of it wise to include him because by the time I was releasing the list, his leaving for the Angolan team had not come up and it was better to get his name on it (Kotoko’s Africa squad) than not to have it on and then maybe he does not get the opportunity to travel,” Dramani explained.

“We’re putting some mechanism in place so that in the absence of Ben Acheampong, it will not be like a vacuum but someone will be readily ready to fill in that gap.”

Acheampong underwent trials with Swedish club Helsingborg at the beginning of the season but the move fell through.

He has scored just once after 10 rounds of matches in the Ghanaian top flight.
