Konadu dismisses concerns over Gyan's captaincy

Ghana captain Asaomah Gyan

By Ameenu Shardow

Assistant coach Maxwell Konadu disagrees with the assertion captain Asamoah Gyan is not an inspirational leader.

Issues have been raised over the leadership qualities of the Al Ain striker both on and off the field of play.

Unlike previous Black Stars captains, the 27-year-old chooses not to yell or make gestures during matches to show he is the leader of the team.

Some have however misconstrued the lack of these antics as a deficiency in Gyan’s captaincy.

But Konadu insists the technical team are content with former Sunderland hitman’s stewardship.

“As a captain, you don’t need to show the whole world you are a leader,” he said.

“And so if you don’t see him yelling at players or not showing gestures towards his players that does not mean he is not inspirational.

“He is doing his best and we have been praising him for doing that.”

Am sure only u guys can see it.
His performance in dis tournament has been below average.
Honestly I don’t no if it is age dat is catching up with him.
He is very slow on da ball.

  2. JUSTACOMMMENT says:

how do u give captain to a player who will sacrifice sunderland for al hin. does it mean he does not believe he can stay in the best leagues and earn as much as etoo, esien, muntari etc . He does not deserve to be a captain. i guess he is now a liability more than asset to the team he is a captain therefore u cant easily sub him meanwhile he cant score .

    • don king says:

i totally agree with you Justa, how can you leave a competitive football arena to a more lower one like UAE? infact he would have been more powerful and better than now if he had stayed in the EPL. i must say that his decision to play for Al hin has never helped Ghana and him self as a striker since he is gradually becoming rusty

  3. D LIGHT says:

What is Maxwell implying? Dat Gyan don’t like SHOWING-OFF?! The guy is just clueless and has no quality or idea to be made a captain. Stephen Gerrard, Lionel Messi, Cassillas & Thiago Silva are not the type who love to talk, but their workethics and will to impact inspire their teamates to play to their tempo & standard. The fact dat he was begged to calloff his
self-imposed exile with the promise of making him the Captain makes him think he is a god who needs to b Mollycoddled and Worshiped. That is why he acts so lazily & leisurely on the pitch. Look at those brilliant deliveries Adomah gave him… But he only ended up blaming him for his profligacy.
Maxwell should save us the Fib!!! it’s no brainer dat the Blackstar player who loves to Brag & Showoff is Gyan. He is not a leader and can never be one… Him wearing the armband doesn’t make him one either. Ur stomachs have forced u guys to appoint him as one but its crystal clear to everyone dat Painstil is the Leader, and not that Wannabe!

i trust de saving power of god that 1 day, ghana will be free from the torment of asamoah gyan

So, according to the coaching stuff, when it comes to leadership, it is all about… gesticulation? Sorry guys, you got it all wrong! Leadership ain’t a puppet show, it’s something deeper. A good coach can assemble a set of good players, train them well and just go by the book. What does the book say about leadership? A leader has a strong and imposing voice, makes remarks to his playmates, occasionally even yells at them… I’m sorry, there is not such a thing as the book of leadership! A leader is someone who inspires, who sets an exemple, by his endurance to pain(both physical and psychological), by his commitment to the common cause and by his will to prevail through this common cause. And yes, therefore, he doesn’t need to be a yawper. But he needs one thing. To be born for it! And it doesn’t matter if he is born a mute one! You want an example? Mido has always been a bit of an entertainer, a yawper on the field and certainly the most glamorous figure of the egyptian football in recent times. Yet, under Sehata, Hassan has been the captain and the leader on the pitch. And i imagine, off it, as well. Hassan has been a quite man, yet he managed to unite a team and a nation under his captaincy in such a manner that galvinised their spirit and winner’s mentality. The coach should always be the one to set the rules(a bit like a general) and it’s up to the squadron to choose whether to follow them or not. In the case of Mido, it was his choice to not go by the rules. Sehata was clear on this matter. “It’s my way or the highway!”. Everyone was shocked. Mido, the glamorous, Mido the only player to progress outside the egyptian borders, in the lucrative and well estimed european leagues, Mido with his perky demeanor, kicked out of the team? Well, we all know how the story unfolded from then on. Egypt went on to win three consecutive AFCON tournaments, a record time! Mohamed Zidane risked to be Mido 2 in this team but he chose, much to his credit, otherwise. He adjusted to the rules and was wise to do so. If i ever coached an exhibition african team from the last decade, the sort of friends Zidane vs friends Ronaldo, i’d call Gyan, Mido, Feindouno, Kader Keita and of course, a couple of algerian and moroccan players. I would certainly not call any of the above, in case i was a coach in a football team. A real one, with a real ambition for achieving things. That is the difference between a good coach and a top coach. A top coach sets the stage and seeks so that the play unravels according to strict rules that abide to a consensus in the present and adjust to any variables for the future. A top coach has an eye of things, not by following a book, but by writing his own book. I don’t have any objection on Gyan being called to the national team of Ghana for AFCON 2013. But him, named the captain of the team, just obliterates the true sense of consensus, given the poor form he is in, for the present, and castrates any margins that the ghanaian football is left with, in order to adjust to the challeges that the future brings in. And this, given the man’s demeanor and character. The coach gives me the impression that he mostly cares about proving things to everyone, when it comes to Gyan’s case. This, not only risks misjudgement of the situation as it is unfolding in present time, but also a misinterpretation of everyone’s status(including the coach’s) for the future. The image of coach Appiah, spying CIV from the stands(during their preparation match against Egypt), alongside an otiose looking Gyan, points at this direction. A coach should always stand higher than any footballer. If the coach thinks that he will deliver, simply by playing the El Cid card in the case of Gyan, he should be at least aware, that El Cid’s persona, has nothing to do with Asamoah Gyan’s, not just before both men’s exile but also after it.

  8. D LIGHT says:

Gimli my man, another blockbuster from u. I want to see more of ya comments to blow off those asslickers and constipated heads who influx this sites with their clown & toddling Submitions. In the last Afcon , he (GYAN) in an interview labelled himself as “African Best striker and Gh ever best frontman”. He claimed he is the spine of the team, the reason the Bs finds it very difficult to perform in his absence.” When i watched him say this, i was hoping to see him walk his words on the pitch. But oops wat did we see?! He started blaming his midfielders for not supplying him d passes. And wen he scored dat freekick against MALI, he pulled his pants down (ottophista), shaking his butts and loosing every ball dat came his way. He hates critics but loves appraisals. B’cos he’d been giving money to those bunch of sycophants who call emselves journalist in the country, all of them shy away from being objective in his matters. But everything dat has a Beginning has an End and Everything that Goes up, surely comes down.
    Long live the BS!
