Sami Khedira does not believe the arrival of Michael Essien at Real Madrid is a sign that Jose Mourinho has lost faith in his ability.

The Ghana international made a shock last minute move from Chelsea on transfer deadline day.

Essien’s move was necessitated by the need to see regular first team action – something he was not getting at Chelsea under manager Roberto Di Matteo.

His arrival has however raised speculations he is in to dethrone the German as the regular holding midfielder in Madrid’s starting line up – especially with the departure of Lassana Diarra.

Essien’s career thrived most under Jose Mourinho during his time as Chelsea manager and that fruitful relationship is expected to be relived at Real Madrid.

But Khedira insists he is still a formidable force and is ready to prove his worth to boss Jose Mourinho.

“Lassana Diarra has been sold," Khedira told kicker.

"You have not read much about that. The fact is we have had four or five defensive midfielders over the past few years.

“This year we have Xabi Alonso, Michael Essien and me.

"I want to try to exert more influence on the game and to make use of my attacking qualities."

The 25-year-old scored four times as Madrid clinched the title last season, and adds: "Those four goals last season were better than the zero goals I scored in my first season for Real, but I believe I have not reached the end of my development."
