Ghana midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng suffered a major dissappointment in the UEFA Champions League after his club Schalke were thrashed 6-1 by Real Madrid.

The 26-year-old started the game for the German club but failed to impress in his deep-lying midfield role against the maruading Spanish giants.

Karim Benzema got the rout on the way with a 13th minute finish after being fed by Cristiano Ronaldo.

Gareth Bale doubled the lead eight minutes later afterwhich Ronadlo inevitably got in the scoresheet to make it 3-0 at the start of the second half.

Benzema grabbed his brace in the 57th minute after which Boateng made way for Leon Gorerzka having laboured in a holding midfield role.

The change did little to affect the game as Bale grabbed his brace in the 69th minute.

Cristiano Ronaldo also got his second on the night after rounding the Schalke goalkeeper to tap in a minute to the end of regulation time.

There was however enough time for a wonder strike from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to give the home fans something to really cheer about.

Real Madrid are all but through to the quarter finals of this season's Champions League with the resounding result as they pursue that elusive 10th triumph in Europe.
