Ken Agyapong's Treason Case Adjourned

Posted On Sunday, 6th May 2012

The trial of beleaguered New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin North, Kennedy Agyapong has been adjourned to 23rd May 2012.

The reason given for the adjournment was that the Attorney General has not yet received the docket on Mr. Agyapong because the Police claim that in setting the bail conditions, the court did not order a report date for him.

The state prosecution asked the court to grant them more time because they had not received Mr. Agyapong?s docket for ?study and advise? from the Police.

Mr. Agyapong appeared in court in the company of his lawyers, Nii Ayikoi Otu, Atta Akyea, Mike Oquaye Jnr and Kuuku Welsing Jones.

The opposition firebrand is being tried for making treasonable comments on an Accra-based radio station, Oman FM which have been described by many as inflammatory.

He has been charged for treason felony, attempt to commit genocide and engaging in acts of terrorism.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker was picked up by the law enforcement agencies and was released on a GH?200,000 bail by the Fast Track High Court shortly after a Human Rights Court granted him bail on health grounds following a habeas corpus writ filed by his lawyers.

Meanwhile, Lawyers for the Member of Parliament for the Assin North constituency have given indications that they would file for a discontinuance of the trial for which their client has been charged with three counts of Terrorism, Genocide and Treason felony.

According to lead counsel Nii Ayikoi Otoo, they were ready to go the full hog but if the spate of adjournment continues, the legal team would move a motion for the discontinuance of the trial and a discharge of their client.
