John Pantsil to captain Ghana against Mali

Posted On Saturday, 28th January 2012

Defender John Pantsil will captain Ghana against Mali in their Africa Cup of Nations group match on Saturday night.

The Leicester City right-back has been handed the armband following the suspension of John Mensah.

The 29-year-old first skippered the Black Stars in September against Swaziland at home during the qualifiers.

But Pantsil says the stakes are high this time and he must live up to expectations.

“Yes, I have done it before but this is different level. It is a Nations Cup and the whole world is watching.

“I have been with Stephen Appiah and then John Mensah so I have learnt a lot to be successful.

“We don’t call ourselves favourites at this tournament. We are here to compete.

“Like we always say God helps those who help themselves so we are helping ourselves so that God will see us through.”

Pantsil is one of the two experienced players in the Black Stars line -up with four Nations Cup finals appearances under his belt.

    • tzooh says:

Yo john paintsil sucks as far as i am concerned, the guy is terrible at both defending and crossing, i cant believe he will be starting ahead of opare and inkoom, and captaining ghana lol this guy will be the demise of ghana. He talks too much yet he cant play. BOOOOOOOOOOOOO PAINTSIL YOUR TIME IS UP. YOU SUCK SO BAD, FULHAM COULD NOT WAIT TO GET RID OF YOU. BTW, the captaincy i believe goes like this mensah – essien (did not make squad) – kingson (but he did not make the squad) – paintsil – muntari – gyan (remember he captained ghana vs south africa right after the wc ahead of dede) and then finally andre dede ayew. But it does not matter b’cos no matter what dede will captain ghana afterall he is only 22 and all those captains ahead of him are in their late 20′s. Dede will be captain by at least 25

      • tzooh says:

or even sooner, look at ramsey of arsenal he became captain of wales at age 19 ahead of gareth bale, earnshaw and craig bellamy

      • brb says:

what a squad this would have been:
        1. daniel agyei
        2. kwarasey
        3. razak brimah (tenerife – gk)
        4. johnathan mensah
        5. john mensah
        6. vorsah
        7. essien
        8. daniel opare
        9. inkoom
        10.david addy
        11.jerome boateng
        12.prince boateng
        13.dede ayew
        14.muntari
        15.emmanuel frimpong
        16.ishmael yartey

        20.gyan
        21.balotelli
        22.danny welbeck
        23.eric bekoe

    • SA says:

Paintsil is senior to muntari, he also has more caps so he deserves to wear the captain’s armband
      ranking:
      John Mensah
      Michael Essien
      John Paintsil
      Muntari
      Gyan
and so on and so forth

  2. Hafsa says:

@Chu…… DEDE is the captain after Muntari

  3. The third deputy captain should have been derek boateng and not dede ayew all the best to the stars.

  4. Adazu M says:

The important thing is 2 win not who captain de team.

  5. DAITEY GAD says:

Gay people in ghana are fool.the whitemen are using them rituals their anus too is sufering always wearing pampers now they will die one by one including david cameron and obama.look at malawi they are recieving their payment of flood because of gay practising.GOD IS GREAT.let us FEAR HIM GHANAIANS AND LIVE GAY FOR WESTERN COUNTRIES .

  6. texas says:

Why do some you guys spend so much time debating black stars captaincy?
They are in a difficult match and instead of guys praying and giving them words of
encouragement you guys are debating about who captains. Ghana supporters criticize too much, and that is why there is always pressure on Ghana teams during tournaments.

  7. Concerned citizen says:

He trapped us all. The flagwaving, the praying, the countless media-interviews helped him to stay in the picture. It’s certaintly not his field performance that earns him a permanent start for the black stars

  8. Chino says:

Is dis ‘brb’ guy in his right senses at all?

  9. Like Ignatius says:

@ Chino: the is just expressing his opinion and He is entitled to it, you know? @brb: if wishes were horses ……
