John Pantsil in line for Ghana return against Malawi next month

By Patrick Akoto

John Pantsil is likely to be handed  a recall to the Black Stars ahead of the return fixture of the 2013 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Malawi next month.

The 30-year-old defender has been on cloud nine since he joined Israeli giants Hapoel Tel Aviv where he has featured in their last five games after emerging as their undisputed first- choice at the right-back.

The West African heavyweight laboured to beat The Flames 2-0 in the first leg at home and that has re-ignited the debate on shoring up the team with experienced hands.

Many of the Black Stars players including Asamoah Gyan and Andre Ayew have expressed the need to recall some of the experienced players into the squad ahead of the crucial second leg in Blantyre.

Coach Kwesi Appiah could hand the former West Ham and Fulham man a return to the national team following the disappointing displays from Daniel Opare and Samuel Inkoom.

The Standard Liege defender earned his first competitive start at the right back position during the qualifier at home but many feel Paintsil can do better even with the presence of Samuel Inkoom.

There are growing reports that the ex-Leceister City player could be considered to return to his position after his commanding performances for the Uefa Europa League campaingers.

Pantsil was been one of the mainstays of the Ghana national team for several until he was cut out following a difficult spell at English Championship side.

He has two world cups under his belt and is the most second capped player after goalkeeper Richard Kingson with an incredible 85 senior appearances.

opare was decent. Inkoom should not play right back.

  2. fred says:

Opare talks too much but has been average of late. Inkoom has lost form since 2010 AFCON and needs time to pick himself up. Paintsil is experienced and can do the job. If it isnt broken, it doesnt need fixing!!
Let’s concentrate on left back now

    • afrikaba1 says:

paintsil should be accepted back but on the bench. at least opare can overlap something painstil and inkoom ar e too rigid to do. in terms of decent crossings opare didnt do what he normally do but it was still better than painstil and inkoom on the best day

      • Africanus says:

We have to put an end to this “fr3 fr3 kobo” mindset. You cannot build a formidable, all conquaring team by consistently shuffling the players. We should know our first eleven by now, feature them consistently in every match, let them gel, be able to predict each other’s movement, and become completely cohesive.

Painstil is on his way out, looking up to Brazil 2014 and beyond, I will choose Opare. He may not have fare better against Malawi, but that does not mean he can’t improve his game. We turn to focus on the Now, and forget that team building is a process, not an event. Let us focus on the yonger players, and give them time to gel as a team.

  3. real sabacious says:

u guys gotta stop cheap publicity and think of Ghana’s interest!not disrespecting Paintsil,he has nothing good to offer the stars!he has always struggle on the right full back since 2002 in mali.now that age is catching him up.he has nothing good to offer interms of overlapping, which is the main incredient of modern right full back.the early Akwasi Appiah sees the wisdom in inviting tried and tested players like owusu abeyie, wakaso and nana akwasi asare the best us all.

  4. Dr Who says:

Opare wasnt bad against Malawi.Paintsil can be called back.

  5. Nii Kwatei says:

What’s up with you all? Do we want to build a young dynamic team for 2014, or do we want to rely on dead old horses?

  6. nii adama says:

Inkoom should b banned frm blakstars..we need paintsils experience.

  7. bbc says:

Ghanaian football is a joke cos we don’t know whether we are moving forward or backwards it’s a shame. We always critisize players and when they move on we will be the same people to turn our back to say those old players are better than the ones we already said were better than them.In this case, are we building forward or we are just doing try and error in mathmathies?

    • Africanus says:

Our problem is we want to win today. We forget that losing today may not necessarily be a bad thing. It may be good to lose some matches today in order to prepare a team for tomorrow. The important thing is our FA and coaches should know what they are doing. They should have a plan on the table and stick to it, and not be distracted by calls for experience and whatever.

  8. coconutman says:

Opare did an excellent job against Malawi. He struggled a bit in the first few minutes which is normal, but his overall game was stellar. He had good pace, kept his man in front of him and never allowed his attacker to ever outpace him to be a threat to goal. He was always between his attacker and the goal. He dribbled well and his ball handling skills were excellent. He made some excellent crosses into the penalty area. His movement off the ball was crisp and confident. This guy Opare is a Black Stars starter material. I have watched Inkoom and Paintsil in that position and they always made me on edge. They would sprint up to help with the attack and then struggle to recover for their defensive assignment. With Opare I could actually relax because he recovered quckly on the counter attack. I had confidence and knew he could get the job done. Fast paced attackers and tricky skilled attackers cannot intimidate him. The same could be said of H Afful on the left full back position. Baring any injuries I would say the Ghana full back position is solid. Afful, Boye, Vorsah, Opare are all starters.

To me this will be a test case to see if Coach Appiah is up to snuff. If he decides to cut Opare and bring back Paintsil then I would conclude that the Black Stars job was handed to an amateur.

I was skeptical of Harrison Afful when Coach Appiah picked him but he is good in his position. He was a good pick. In other words Appiah is calling up the right players but is he able to really spot the talented ones that are worth keeping to develop a consistent starting 11?

To conclude Waris not Jordan. Always select the strikers that have the highest number of goals with their Clubs and are getting the job done not because of their last name. This is soccer not a dynasty.

  9. @GHgeordie says:

If Akwesi Appiah wants to keep his job and make a name for himself then he should select our best players irrespective of the age on their passport, how long the’ve been around or the leagues they play in. Personally, i think the only player who comes close to the level of paintsil is Afful. not those two tactically bankrupt lads (Inkoom and opare). I also dont know why Kissi-Boateng of Berekum chelsea isnt our regular left back.
One thing Ghanains must understand is; presenting the youngest squad at a tournament isnt an achievement, winning the trophy is.

  10. philosopha says:

I think we need paintsil and owusu abeyie all our old squad. This new boys are not that good they need some time. We are trying to play like the western world, but our ligue is not strong for that, so please lets use those who play in the west they have the abilities to deliver. Maybe two or tree home players can be call but not more than that.

  11. Randolph says:

We need all our players who can still play active football. Mix the old with the new to qualify us for both AFCON & World Cup. CIV is profiting from their older players – the team in Africa today.
The younger ones will surely take over some day. Call Olele too to deputize for Adam Kwaresey. Send Inkoom Opare, Asante, Jordan, Sowah etc to Meteors.

  12. KWAME NAAGBEWA says:

IT’S ABOUT TIME AKWASI FIELDS A CONSTANT FIRST 11 SO THAT THE TEAM CAN REALLY BE A TEAM, NOT SWAPPING PLAYERS RANDOMLY, THIS CREATES UNCERTAINTY IN PLAYERS MIND AND ATTITUDE. What is Akwasi appiah’s first eleven?

  13. HNH says:

If for the reason that JP has played five times for his club he merits a call up, then nana kwesi asare nd wakaso equally deserve a call up. They r the future of gbs JP has his best days bhind him

  14. jojo says:

Definately welcome back Pansil even at his age he can still play the position better than Inkoom and Opare! I rest my case!!!!!!!!

  15. eben says:

I think coach should try Agyeman-Back or Derek Boateng on the right back bcos it becoming a problem all the three r not good enough

  16. Desmond nyande says:

John pinstil is far far better, good and experienced than ikoom and opare and olele should call up in the team

  17. koff44 says:

inkoom is a modern right back, if you don’t know.

  18. koff44 says:

inkoom is a modern right back and any tactically astute coach will choose him over Opare and Painstil. When kwesi appiah sees quality, he sees.

  19. LAZY BONE says:

OH GHANA!!!! if OPARE had 1 game bad does not mean he is not good, we all know his abilities and you ppl shouldn’t forget that HE came from injury to Play 90mins and u Won. Ghanaians are just ungrateful. Pansil and Inkoom have played 10 games bad this means they are not good enough to be compared to Opare

  20. Magnum says:

Without OPARE Ghana will face a big problem in MALAWI, because he is strong and very fast in recovery, OPARE,VORSAH,BOYE AND AFFUL is the best line up because the game against Malawi in ACCRA there was no mistakes in the Defence. Appiah think twice because this same Ghanaians will make you change a winning team and after u loose they will say u are a bad coach

  21. fenandohussien says:

    we need john pansil seriously

  22. Bengarzy says:

Inkoom is gud,Opare is beta &Painstil is de best.

  23. Dr Who says:

OPARE,BOYE,VORSAH & AFFUL are ok.Coach Appiah should keep them until further notice…PERIOD!

  24. Cisco Modules says:

I think that is among the such a lot vital information for me. And i am glad reading your article. But wanna statement on some general issues, The web site style is ideal, the articles is actually excellent : D. Good activity, cheers
