Ghana defender John Mensah has signed a six-month deal with Stade Rennes, the French outfit confirmed on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old, who is a free agent, returns to a club where he played 76 games in three seasons from 2006 to 2008.

The Ghanaian defender has been training with Rennes since November and was widely rumoured he was considering signing a long-term deal with the club.

The French outfit confirmed on Wednesday, they've reached an agreement with the former Sunderland man for an initial six-month deal before deciding on his long term future.

Mensah is expected to be a direct replacement for compatriot for John Boye who will be away on international duty with the Black Stars at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

His clublessness cost him a place in the Black Stars squad for the Nations Cup despite playing 82 times for the West African giants.
