Ex Ghana captain John Mensah played competitive club football for the first time in 15 months after playing part in Stade Rennes' 2-1 Coupe de France win over Lens on Sunday.

The 30-year-old was handed a starting role in central defence by Rennes boss Frédéric Antonetti and he gave a good account of himself before being replaced 11 minutes into the second half by Moroccan young defender Yassine Jebbour.

Rennes had to fight from behind as they conceded an early goal in the 28th minute to cement their victory against the Ligue 2 side at the Stade Félix Bollaert.

Mensah who has been brought in as replacement for compatriot John Mensah is expected to make his Ligue 1 return over the weekend for Rennes as they take on Bordeaux at the Route de la Lorient.

Mensah is with the Lorient-based side on a short-term six month loan stint.
