Jo Kuffour: Lack of goals was playing on my mind

Posted On Monday, 7th January 2013

Jo Kuffour is concerned he has not been scoring for his club

Jo Kuffour feels a weight has been lifted off his shoulders after he finally ended his run without a Wanderers goal.

The striker had gone 1,147 minutes without getting his name on the scoresheet when he ended his barren streak with a fine lobbed finish to win Saturday’s game against Chesterfield.

A prolific scorer elsewhere during his career, Kuffour admitted his lack of goals had been uncharacteristically playing on his mind.

And he spoke of his relief at getting off the mark in his 17th Wanderers appearance, hoping it will kick start a run of goals.

The former Arsenal trainee said: “I needed one of them. It was just instinctive – it was bouncing around in the box and I managed to help it on over the keeper. Hopefully that will be my first of many.

“As a striker you always get annoyed when you’re not scoring goals and been working hard in training.

“It was playing on my mind a little bit. It doesn’t normally but it was a long time since I last scored.

“All I can do is keep believing and I want to thank God that I finally got the opportunity to score. I hope I can get many more.”

The goal clearly helped to settle the 31-year-old, who was heavily involved in much of Blues’ attacking play after he had put his side into what turned out to be an unassailable 2-1 lead.

He said: “It gave me a lot of confidence after I scored. I needed a goal to kick start me.

“My season’s been a bit disrupted. I haven’t had a pre-season, I came in late to the squad, I was out for six-seven weeks with my ankle injury, but hopefully I’ve put that all behind me now. I just want to go on a good run and help push the boys up the table.

“I’m getting fitter every game I play. I felt a lot stronger today than I have done.”
