Jerome Boateng suspended for two Champions League matches

Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng will miss both matches of the Champions League second phase after UEFA slapped the German international with a two-match ban following his red card picked up in the 4-1 group victory over Belarus club BATE Borisov.

The Bundesliga giants, who hold a commanding nine-point lead in the domestic league, are already missing long-term injury victims Holger Badstuber and may dip into the winter transfer market with Brazilian defender Dante and Belgian centre-back Daniel van Buyten currently out-of-favour with coach Jupp Heynckes.

Spanish defender Javi Martinez and Ukrainian international Antoli Timoschuk have been favoured by Heynckes to slot into the back four, from their normal midfield positions.

Boateng took part at the 2010 World Cup for Germany and played against his brother Kevin Prince Boateng, who represented Ghana in the first time two siblings have played against each other on opposite sides at the showpiece competition.

Germany won the match 1-0 before losing to Spain in the semi-finals while Ghana went out on penalties against Uruguay in a failed bid to become the first African nation to reach the last-four.

The draw for the next round of the Champions League is set for Thursday in Nyon, Switzerland with the first legs starting on February 12.
