ICC petition is for comic relief ? Baako

Posted On Sunday, 29th April 2012

Editor-in-chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako has predicted that the International Criminal Court (ICC) will decline jurisdiction over the case involving Assin North Member of Parliament (MP), Kennedy Agyapong.

The Ghana Coalition for the International Criminal Court (ICC) petitioned the court to investigate alleged genocidal and ethnic-cleansing pronouncements made by the MP who is facing charges of treason felony, attempted genocide and terrorism.

But the editor, speaking on Joy FM?s Newsfile also aired on the Joy News channel on Multi TV, said the ICC will not give audience to the petition because the matter is being prosecuted in Ghana and that government is willing to prosecute.

??Based on all the things I?ve heard from people who know the principles and procedures of the ICC this (petition) was dead on arrival,? Baako empasised.

He added that though the relevant state organs looking into the matter are engaging in a ?comedy of error?, they have the capacity to prosecute.

??Some of the charges here (against Ken Agyapong), apart from being outrageous, are ridiculous,? Malik Baako stated and added that documents he has intercepted from officialdom indicate the state is struggling to prosecute based on those charges. A review of the charges, he said, may be in order.

?Relative to Ken Agyapong?s statement and the ICC, I think the petition to them is for comic relief? It has no standing, it won?t fly,? Kweku Baako insisted.
