Have Your Say: Should returnee Gyan continue to take Ghana's penalty kicks

Posted On Thursday, 12th July 2012

Should returnee Gyan continue to take Ghana's penalty kicks?

Should Asamoah Gyan retain his role as first choice penalty taker of the Black Stars as he returns to the team.

Gyan has missed two crucial penalty kicks at major tournament for the four-time African champions.

First, he smashed a last minute kick against the cross-bar in the quarter-final clash against Uruguay which denied Ghana a historic semi-final berth.

At the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations early this year, the Al Ain striker’s spot-kick was saved by Kennedy Mwene in the 1-0 semi-final defeat to eventual winners Zambia.

The 26-year-old suffered abuses especially on social networking sites and decided to take a break.

Let’s have your say: SHOULD ASAMOAH GYAN CONTINUE TO TAKE PENALY KICKS FOR THE BLACK STARS.

yes he could take the penalty spot

    • tzooh says:

ghana should do it the way the germans take their penalties: rotation. the germans never let one player take consecutive penalties. For instance, if podolski takes a penalty vs england, in the next game if they get a penalty ozil would take, then muller, lahm, etc. Ghana has four of five good penalty takers: gyan, muntari, kwadwo asamoah, ayew, badu, inkoom, etc. So instead of letting gyan take all our penalties and eventually becomig predictable, it should be rotated

    • bruce says:

Penalties should be rotated. Gyan can still take penalties if he is mentally, and psychologically fit. As the saying says “a good soldier should never be afraid of combat.” Let us support him.

  2. van says:

there will be notting wrong with that.we shld not 4get he does not intentionaly miss penalties.any player in the black stars can miss a penalty

  3. Ghanaman says:

Every player even Messi has alousy day on aspot-kick,so yes Gyan shuld take them.

  4. Gunshot says:

    no problem with it.

  5. Ansong says:

yes he should be able to take it

  6. Ali fobia says:

Who else sh’ld take ofcourse he sh’ld take it.

  7. Gunshot says:

    hes fit to take it

  8. Chu says:

equivocal caption. Lets just hope that all eleven players can take spot kick because we expirienced what happened in 1992 and 2006 where all players were obliged to do so

  9. Ansong says:

He should be able to take it.

  10. Virgin brother says:

It is the coach and the playing body dat determines who takes spot kicks.

  11. Carlos or Cady says:

No he should not take them andre ayew is much better pen taker than gyan he score all his pen he take 4 his club

  12. Kobby says:

I think he shl’d he is still our talisman

  13. Amakye says:

I am totally disappointed in the so called journalists we have in this country. The so called Michael Essien has run away from taking a penalty before.2.Apart from the retired captain Appiah, which of the other players is bolder than gyan.no body feels happy if he mistake a penalty.however instead criticising him, some supporters go as far as threatening his family n as an educated journalist,is this the most sensible question u can ask.SHAME u could’ve ask for something better.

  14. Godfred bekoe says:

why not even world best players miss spot kicks.asamoah all the way.

  15. kwesi says:

i think yes nd he will still be our 1st choice penalty taker in the black stars squad.

  16. Jojo says:

Gyan shud take al our penalties,bt shud desist frm takin penalties dat wud take us 2 nxt stage in al competions.Gyan akwaaba

  17. Djan tee says:

Why not because he is still our no1 penalty taker?

  18. Yes of course he shld take all ghana penalty kicks b’cos he is de no 1 kicker in de team!

  19. bbc says:

I think this is very interesting topic and in my observation many want Gyan to take the panelty and when he misses these people will come out insulting him. Our problem is we never stick to a point and always complaining. Hmmmmm

  20. Azoya Robert says:

Yes, We should allow him because Gy is ghana number one.

  21. ujean says:

guys it seems u dun kno,a close fam.said gyan as a condition of his return has vowed neva to take a crucial pen.in any full time game for gh,nd i fink its the best way to avoid any troubles in the future

  22. pk says:

neva cos that boi is seriously not serious

  23. Edward says:

NO!!! Dede Ayew can take it. B’cos we will still talk.

  24. Edward says:

No!!! Dede ayew can take it b’cos we will still talk

  25. YUSSIF says:

THIS IS NOT AN ISSUE, YOU GUYS SHOULD POST FOR INDIVIDUALS TO DEBATE ON B’COS ALL THESE COMMENTS WILL KILL THE SPIRIT AND EGO OF ASAMOAH GYAN BUT RATHER WE SHOULD TASK OUR PLAYERS TO SCORE GOALS ON THE FIELD OF PLAY RATHER CALLING FOR PENALTIES IN ORDER TO WIN MATCHES.

  26. The real Gunshot says:

Ansong i understand ur moda is a whore n dat u dont even knw ur fada. N tru frustration u make tribal comments @ the least opportunity. Infact am here 4 u now.i wish i can meet u physically so i can beat the hell out of u. Kwasia.

  27. Ijahman says:

Never. Because if he misses one more crucial penalty and send people to their graves by heart attack we will do to him tge same thing the columbians did to tge defender Escobar when he scored against hinself at the world cup. We will assassinate him in broad day light . Or we will do to him what the Camerounians did to did to Wome when he missed that penalty that denied them a spot at the world cup. A word to tge wise is in the North. I rest my case. Nkwaseasem kwa.

  28. rutherford says:

gyan’s mother says she will poison herself if gyan ever takes a panelty 4 de blackstars.

  29. TT says:

Gyan has missed three crucial Pk’s not two. The first one was 2006 World Cup against Czech Republic.

Let the coach train every player including goalkeepers to be expert Pk takers. Remember 2010 against Uruguay on the penalty shoot out.

  30. Watataman says:

Yes but and a very big but, he should not be the only player and i applaude the first comment by suggesting we use the rotation system.
We have five good penalty kickers in the team and i will recommend we use them rotationally.Sulley Muntary is a great kicker, Ayew is a wonderful kicker,Gyan is a superb kicker, Agyemang Badu is an intelligent kicker and up coming Atsu a delightful kicker.
Any penalty kicker must always be conditioned before the kick and so far Agyemang Badu tops them all. But that should not deny the fact that our leading scorrer is the man. However i would like him to kick when it does not really matter. When it matters, we should look for inteligent kickers period.
Gyan miss penalties because he think about the dance before the score and that mess up his head a bit.

  31. bbc says:

Even if i were Gyan himself i will never step up for a panelty kick for now.

  32. Abis Kola says:

Exactly. he should play, but not only one player to play penalty in the team. we should have others too.

  33. Jojo says:

    Yes,Yes,Yes,Yes,Yes,Yes,Yes,Yes,Yes,Yes,Yes!!!!!!!!!

  34. mukmin says:

He should when there’s no pressure to score ie friendlies or when we r ahead by a couple of goals but for crucial pks Sulley, Dede or Badu should take them.

  35. King Wise Don Fuzzy says:

    funny topic,GSN .

  36. coconutman says:

After every practice the Coach should hold a cool down penalty contest. Every player who fancies himself a potential penalty taker should participate. They will take turns taking pks winner stays on. The last man standing will go into the coaches log. When there is a penalty opportunity in a game all the players and Coaches will know without a doubt who the best penalty kickers are. With the skill acquired from practice they should be able to convert without a gamble. If Gyan happens to emerge as the top kicker then so be it. Otherwise i say absolutely not.

Every aspect of the Black Stars players should be based on merit the best should always be rewarded with a starting role and not just big names and past performance. It should be based on what have you done lately not what you did years ago. This will prevent accusations of bribery, nepotism, favoritism and God forbid tribalism.

  37. Ansah Julius says:

C.ronaldo, messi and other great players sometimes loss their pk so gyan should continue.

  38. KOFI says:

GYAN SHOULD TAKE HIS FIRST PENALTY WHEN GHANA IS LEADING TO REDUCE TENSION AND BRING BACK HIS CONFIDENCE AS AN IDIVIDUAL IN ORDER TO DELETE THE BAD REPUTATION WHICH HE MIGHT BE KNOWN FOR IN HIS ENTIRE LIFE.

  39. Nana says:

Ghanaians when are we going to learn? Mother Africa why are out ppl always making the same mistakes and not learning. Asamoah Gyan misses penalty kicks for blacks stars more than he makes them, he has miss 3 of 5 penalties at main tournaments, yet people still want him to take it. Africa will never learn that’s why the white man keeps laughing at us

  40. crusader says:

is funny when i hear people say gyan is the number one penalty taker. the number of spot kicks gyan has missed and those that he has scored cant be used to categorize him as a good spot kick taker. i love his courage especially the way and manner he psyched himself to convert the second kick against Eruguay.his problem is that sometimes he is over confident and swollen headed.

  41. Abedi-Bwalya says:

He only missed one penalty – against Uraguay – and not even by much. The one against Zambia was saved by the keeper, whose responsibility it is to stop all on target shots. Although, those two penalties were extremely important, they are not a big enough sample on which to judge a man’s career.

  42. sam says:

He shldnt. Other players cant take it

  43. Justice Twumasi says:

why not , he should be allowed to take it all time. yes yes yes i say

  44. SAWA says:

why not?he should keep on bcos if ur child gets drown in a river does it means you should stop drinking water?i support him to keep on taking the penalty kicks

  45. skybar says:

Ther’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Gyan wu continue to tke penalty til he permanently retires

  46. ZAIN ABDEEN says:

I THINK GYAN CAN TAKE PENALTIES BUT IT SHOULD BE ROTATIONAL. WE THE FANS MUST BE VERY CAREFUL ON OUR REPRESENTATIVES BECAUSE IT IS NOT EASY

  47. Asantewaa says:

I think all the players should be trained to take penalties so Gyan can be free
