Mali goes into the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations’ third-place playoff on Saturday in Malabo a more cheerful side than their opponent’s Ghana.
While the Eagles exceeded expectations by reaching the semi-finals and taking title favourites Ivory Coast to the wire, the Black Stars are reeling after a shock defeat by Zambia having failed to score from an early penalty.
The countries who never clashed in 27 previous tournaments now square off for the second time in 15 days with the venue changing from Franceville in south-eastern Gabon to the island capital of neighbouring Equatorial Guinea.
Ghana gave their best display of this Cup of Nations to overcame Mali 2-0 in Group D last month with star striker Asamoah Gyan scoring the first goal and creating the second for Andre Ayew.
UAE-based Gyan was at his boastful best after that success, telling reporters he was so good that the Black Stars could afford to deploy a solitary striker.
He was far less talkative this week, though, after having an early penalty pushed to safety by Zambia goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene, and it proved a costly miss with Chipolopolo (Copper Bullets) snatching a late winner.
Gyan has an unfortunate record with penalty kicks — he slammed one over the bar against Uruguay in 2010 that prevented Ghana becoming the first World Cup semi-finalists from Africa.
There was sympathy for Gyan in the Black Stars camp with assistant coach Kwesi Appiah saying “it is always the best players who miss penalties” and captain John Mensah revealing: “I told Asamoah to concentrate on Mali”.
“We will try hard to finish third,” said South Africa-based Mali defender Ousmane Berthe, who could not catch Gervinho as he sprinted from the halfway line to score the goal that felled the Eagles.
The outcome may hinge on how coaches Goran Stevanovic of Ghana and Alain Giresse of Mali react.
Will they field full strength sides or experiment with those who were mainly substitutes during the over three-week tournament?
Fatigue is also likely to be a factor with Ghana and Mali understandably looking wearier in the semi-finals than opponents who had an extra rest day after easier last-eight games that did not involve extra time.
Ghana have a one win-one loss record and Mali three losses in a fixture that has produced 73 goals since 1962 at an average of three per match and DR Congo won on penalties in 1998 after trailing Burkina Faso 4-1 with four minutes left.
NOW THE ULTIMATE IS GONE SO THE COACH SHOULD TRY DE ONES WHO HAVE NOT PLAY SO THAT WE CAN SEE THEIR IMPACT IN THE TEAM B4 IS TOO LATE.
watch Gyan promising to score tomorrow by all means:

It amazes me when Ghanaians think that they are gonna win the AFCON next year. It gets harder each year, so this was our time—thanks to Gyan again! Thos who think we are gona win next year, think of these:
1. So long as Virtus international agency still controls our FA and selects players instead coaches, we shall never win anything.
2. The mafia in the GFA that continues to call certain shoddy players at the expense of better ones would still be a hindrance to our cup glory until Jesus comes…or an Aluta happens!
3. Do you seriously think that the players we presented at the AFCON are the nations best? Seriously? I mean seriously? We presented a half-baked team. I mean we excluded certain players who could make this nation win even the world cup – players who can make brazil shake! We have quality wingers we aint using apart from Jordan or Andre; we have Jeffery Sarpong, Quincy Abeyie, Albert Adomah plus Andre and Jordan Ayew!
Left full backs, we have David Addy, Mubarak Wakaso, Nana Akwasi Asare, and even Seth Owusu (local);
right full back we have Daniel Opare, Inkoom, and Lee Addy if we want(utility player); for central defensive pairs, we have Vorsah, Jonathan Mensah, John Boye, Francis Dickoh, Osei Bonsu (Hearts of Oak), Awal Mohammed (Kotoko), Jerry Vandam, etc, etc…many more;
for midfield…i don’t even wanna go there: Kwadwo Asamoah, Uriah Asante (Hearts of Oak), Emannuel Frimpong, Anthony Annan, Derek Boateng, Afriyie Acquah, Daniel Kofi Agyei (Fiorentina), Abdul Razak (Chelsea, UK), Christian Atsu (Porto), Mohammed Abu, plus the wingers mentioned before!
For strikers: Salifu Mohammed (Fiorentina), Maxwell Boadi Acosty (Fiorentina), Kingsley Boateng (AC Milan), Derek Asamoah, Eric Bekoe, Emmanuel Baffour, Asamoah Gyan.
4. SERBIA…SERBIA….SERBIA…egoistic coaches! They can’t win us any trophies—-we shall always be known as “almost winners”. You see the wonders Renard is doing with Zambia? He knows how to bring the best out of his players…Plavi is too egoistic – he is just like Mancini; having all the talent and yet, winning nothing.
So you see, sometimes, I wonder if its the coaches that are stupid, or its the GFA that controls players selections, or its Virtus Int’l that is ruining our game! We have this very wide pool, and active/excellent players…..yet, we choose to to take people like Prince Tagoe, Paintsil, Muntari, etc…! Sulley and others have served us well, but for a competition like this, we needed very sharp, active and fit players. I have excluded John Mensah, Paintsil, Sulley, Tagoe, etc…but still look at the players we have….i haven’t even made mention of Essien, Ishmael Yartey, and KPB in our midfield yet oo!
Ladies and gentlemen, its about time we made the GFA answer some questions on player selection, because i feel they are in the know with regards to some really great players being excluded at the expense of others! With the player pool we have, we have no excuses for not winning a single trophy for the blackstars in over 30yrs..why? Is it sheer stupidity, nepotism, or mismanagement?
Do u guys really wann know why KPB quit…and why Nyantakyi pursued him? It wasnt KPBs fault…that’s what happens if you choose SERBIAN COACHES—meanwhile, the Serbian team isnt even BETTER THAN THE BLACKSTARS!
Y3gyimi ntia na saa….somebody somewhere needs to go; can u imagine this poor nation giving away $5M…i mean 5million dollars just for this useless tournament? How much do we even gain when we win? So why don’t we channel all our resources into winning the world cup with all the players we have…? Then CAF would sit up cos nobody would care about the AFCON anymore…does anyone know how much CAF makes per tournament? Enough said!
And, hey…Asamoah Gyan, stop taking our penalties at crucial moments! Plavi, u better know how to manage players with big egos -cos even Cantona, Ginola, Balotelli, Maradona, Tevez, and other players with bigger egos have been managed. Its not bcos of u that we shall lose our best players…cos u can’t take donkeys to win trophies no matter how good a coach u are – ask Milo…! Soften your stance sometimes and learn how to bring the best out of our best players! nonsense!
I rest my case!
He failed to score when it matters most.
BREAKING NEWS….BREAKING NEWS…..! PLavi has been fired!

Malabo, Feb. 10, GNA -The Ghana Football Association (GFA) will not renew the two year contract of the Black Stars Coach, Goran Stevanovic which expires next month.
An impeccable source at the GFA told the GNA Sport in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea that the Serb will not be given another opportunity with the Black Stars.
The sources said Stevanovic’s last assignment with the Black Stars will be the Federation of International Football Association’s (FIFA) international game against Chile later in the month in the United States of America (USA).
“His contract will not be renewed. But for the international game against Chile, he will have been allowed to leave right after the Africa Cup of Nations.”
Stevanovic promised to deliver Ghana a Nations Cup trophy after a three decade wait when he was contracted as coach almost two years ago and declared that it was time for Ghana to start winning trophies again.
Subsequently, the coach said he will resign if he was unable to back his words with action. However, it appears his failure to annex the trophy will not be the only reason he will either jump to avoid the push or hang on until his contract expires in March.
The source said apart from Stevanovic’s inability to deliver the trophy, there were other issues that made his stay almost no longer welcome.
It is believed the Coach’s supposed ego play with Kelvin Prince Boateng before the latter called time off his international football and some decisions he took with the inclusion and exclusion of some players during the build up to the tourney had made him a bit unpopular.
Meanwhile, information pieced together by GNA Sports indicates that the GFA may consider breaking the cycle of foreign coaches by finally settling for a local one.

undermine mali and die!
Gian u must quit and try your local teams u ar a disgrace 2 Ghana
Ghana played well but Zambia won. Well this may be Zambia’s time to lay their hands on the cup. Remember 1993 plane crash. The ghosts of their departed players perhaps are assisting them.
The fact that ghana did not win the trophy shows that Asamoah Gyan is the course, even world best play missed penalty we all know that ghana performance was very poor from day one, the coach doesn’t have his best XI always do try and tested.Gfa must go to drawing board and fix things before june or else will face the same problem
Not only that but they should also hand over $2million out of the total of $5million to the government. 3rd place means they should return $3m to the government. If they are unable to beat Mali and they drop to the 4th position then they must return $4m back to the government.
The coach should use the reserve players who have had no chance to play for this game. Lets wrap things up and come home safely.
Andre ayew, John Boye, Agyemang badu, Kwadwo Asamoah and Gyan should be benched lest they suffer any injury. This game is not all that necessary.
Also Goal keeper Adjei needs to be given a shot.
It is not the be all or the end all.A coach should always use the best players available when a medal is at stake. To use reserves is enfantile and childish and lacks maturity on your part. You must have made some bad decisions in your life. Now what is it like to be attacked personally.
That Selfish Gyan! GSN take his picture off! He is the only player who did not celebrate when Dede scored against Tunisia and subsequently calling the goal – luck!
For hw many years is is it gonna take Ghana b4 we train a star…….Asamoah Gyan moved from Premiership to UAE nd Ghanains we are still suportin him……our players are signing for more MONEY than to winTROHIES for bigger clubs nd Gh………ANDRE DEDE AYEW IS THE CAPTAIN WHO CAN WIN SOMETHING NOT THE SO CALLED USELESS SENIOR PLAYERS WHO FIGHTS FOR CAPTAINSHIP BUT HAS NO CUP WINNIN SPIRIT…..PAINSTIL,JOHN MENSAH,ANTHONY,ESSIEN,nd ASAMOAH GYAN none of them can win a CUP for GHANA.
We just have to hope for the better for the blackstars to win this match,it is heartbreaking to have one player always break out hearts like that Asamoah Gyan is greedy player and all he thinks about is him been a goal king and it will never happen he should never ever take any penalty for the blackstars again we need a better striker and a better player like Andrew Ayew to take out penalties we are also tired of the mafia in the GFA there people in the blackstars who are not suppose or deserve to be there and the whole of GHANA needs to rise up if we cannot even beat Zambia what team can we beat.
I do think the coach contract should not be renewed.
in my opinion, the coaching position of the black stars should be given to Marcel Desaily as head coach and Ibrahim Tanko as assistant to him.
The ayew brothers are too selfish join it wit arrogant dancer a.ghan.it will not win anything 4 ghana wit ur overage u20 world cup stars fadin out.it is all over, better go & beg prince boateng 4 u to beat zambia 4 qualifications 4 world cup in brazil
