Go Ahead And Sue - EC Calls Prisoners' Bluff

Posted On Monday, 21st May 2012

The Electoral Commission says prisoners have the liberty to proceed to Court should the EC fail to initiate steps to register them the end of the week.

The prisoners, who were given the constitutional right of suffrage for the first time in the December presidential and parliamentary elections, say they were excluded from the month-long exercise because most of them had no national identification cards ? a basic requirement for the novelty biometric exercise.

A legal practitioner Kojo Graham says the Electoral Commission is to blame for the failure of prisoners to register in the just ended biometric exercise and will therefore proceed to court, if by the end of the week the Commission does not come up with a strategy to register the prisoners.

In an interview with Citi News principal spokesperson of the Electoral Commission Silvia Annor said it is within Lawyer Kojo Graham?s rights to go to court.

?We all have rights so going to court is fine but if we do not understand something there is a need to find out what challenges there are as well as what can be done about it? she told Citi News.
