Ghana's 2014 World Cup opponents Zambia have admitted they could face goalkeeping problems.
Goalkeepers' trainer Davies Phiri says there is a big gap in terms of techniques between Chipolopolo custodians Kennedy Mweene and Kalililo Kakonje on one hand and other netminders in the Premier League.
Phiri said the gap is worrying because goalkeepers in the Premier League are in line to be called to the national team.
Phiri, who is conducting a training camp for 15 local goalkeepers, said there is need to reduce the gap between Mweene and Kakonje and the rest.
He said this in an interview at Lusaka’s Sunset Stadium on Wednesday after drilling the goalkeepers.
Phiri said Mweene and Kakonje are way above the rest.
The two goalkeepers have been with the national team since July 2003.
Phiri said the goalkeepers in the Premier League lack basics that are supposed to be taught at club level so that when they are called to the national team they are just polished.
The former Kabwe Warriors and Zambia goalkeeper urged Premier League clubs, especially those in the Super Division, to engage goalkeepers’ trainers because it is a trend world over.
He said if such courses are held regularly, there will be a marked improvement in skills of goalkeepers.
Phiri said having featured for the national team for 10 years, he wants to give back to the country.
''I have trained so many goalkeepers in South Africa and now I want to help train goalkeepers in my country. We have just started the course and there is improvement,'' said Phiri, who was a member of the Chipolopolo technical bench at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations finals co-hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
He said he has learnt the latest techniques of training goalkeepers through watching videos for English sides Chelsea and Manchester United.
