Ghana's joy as Sudan draws with Lesotho in World Cup qualifiers

Sudan fails to beat Lesotho though going top of Group D

By Ameenu Shardow

Sudan failed to take full advantage of Ghana’s wobble in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers by drawing goalless with Lesotho on Sunday.

Though going one point clear on top of Group D, the Crocodiles will feel less fulfilled after spurning several chances to beat Lesotho to establish a healthy distance between them and their close contenders.

They could have brightened their chances of making their first World Cup appearance with a win after Ghana fell 1-0 to African champions Zambia a day before.

Sunday’s result thus leaves Group D widely open with the Black Stars still with the initiative even though they are second-placed.

With a superior goal difference, Ghana needs to win all of its home games and secure a win over Lesotho away and then at least a point against Sudan in Omdurman to progress to the knockout phase of the qualifiers.

It will be the third successive appearance at the mundial if the Black Stars manage to qualify for Brazil 2014.

  1. Kenneth County says:

It’s a little bit of an encouraging news for Ghana in so far as our hopes of qualification are concerned. But we must work hard and resolve to win all our matches and not rely on other results. Our destiny is in our own hands. We lost against Zambia but we were not disgraced. Let’s settle down and rally and resume our onslaught to Brazil from March next year. We can do it by the Grace of God!

  2. MICHAEL says:

Well said Kenneth County. I completely agree with you. Our destiny is in our own hands. If we can win the remaining home matches and make sure we do not lose to Sudan away and beat Lesotho away, we will surely qualify for the final face. The battle has only just began and the Black Stars must be up and doing. I will also prefer Christian Atsu to always start. Akwasi Appiah must be able to have a regular starting eleven. The constant changes will not help the team.

  3. I-Jahman says:

With ghana team in hand of white coach surely it would be easy to sail thru but with local coach then we have to keep on praying which i find madness. AA cant read games when the going get tough bcuz the pedigree is not there.

  4. Ghanas Son says:

We need some more friendly matches for the Black Stars. We can’t be testing players in qualifying matches. Atsu is a good discovery tho.
Adiyiah must now really work to justify his inclusion in future games.
Akwasi Appiah was overwhelmed by the Zambia coaches tactic! Better luck next time

  5. Ansong says:

Now we had what we wished from kumasi coach.Ghana is the only country in the whole world with a coach who never coach any team b4 with track record.

    • the truth says:

shut up you fool. how long do you want him to remain as an assistant coach? when we brought in a farmer from serbia to coach our team, you didnt complain. now that we have akwasi appiah and konadu (best coach in the premier league) as coaches for the black stars you are complaining. inferiority complex will drown you to death you fool. kudos to Akwasi appiah and the black stars and fuck all those who dont believe in them.

  6. The Don says:

….Well said guyz but we really need 2 get a couple of players like Essien, Gyan, P.Boateng & Quincy back in 2 d squad…We also need loads of friendly matches b4 our next qualifier.

  7. Sam says:

Germany were coached by Klinsman in the 2006 world cup. Klinsman had not coached any team b4 that job

  8. Boro says:

Akwasi nearly marred our chances of qualifying to the past ARFCON until Plavi came to do things right.
In fact, yesterday I did not see any smart changes that Akwasi did to show me he has any technical brains. In the first place many thought Opare should not have started ahead of Inkoom. Muntari was not clicking. His passes were not going through. He continuously gave long useless passes. Atsu should have started in this match too.
Now why did it take him so long to change Muntari and Badu who were not clicking on the day but instead Asamoah and Derek who on the day were doing better than those two? What was Adiyiah still doing on the pitch in the second half? Adiyiah was useless but this coach could not see that, why? This show that the Lesotho scoreline was fluke.

  9. john essel says:

Ghana blackstars this time has to win all their matches to book themselves for the knockout stage.Good news to ghanaians

  10. Randy Abbey says:

Coach Appiah is a mumu coach.he must sacked now or else we will not qualify for the world cup.He so dumb.We beat lesotho because they were jet lag.Drop Adiah, jordan Ayew,Opare and inkoom, they are non entities.

  11. GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

    APPIAH ONTI MOOOOOOO, TOM!

    1. HW3, HE DOSENT KNOW HOW TO MASSAGE THE HUGE EGOS OF THESE PLAYERS? LOOK AT HOW INDISCIPLINE N WAYWARD THESE PLAYERS ARE? IT SEEMS LIKE APPIAH IS A BAD OMEN FOR THE TEAM. HIS IDEAS ARE PRIMITVE. HE NEEDS TO GO N COACH CHAN.
    2. HE LACKS THE ABILITY TO PREPARE, AND DRAW TACTICAL STRATEGIES THAT WILL REAP SUCCESS
    3. IN TERMS OF EXPERIENCE HIS BODY OF WORK IS VERY LITTLE. HE HAS NO CONSISTENCY

DESAILLY NEEDS TO BE BROUGHT IN ASAP. ITS NOT TOO LATE. KONADU MUST GO BACK TO FINISH WAT HE STARTED WITH KOTOKO. SILAS TETTEH SHOULD GET THE METEOR/SATTELITES JOB. LET ALL THESE NATIONAL COACHES HAVE REGULAR SHADOW WITH THE NATIONAL TEAM COACH.

EVEN IF WE QUALIFY TO BRAZIL. AKWASI’S RECORD ALONE WILL DO US IN. HE SIMPLY LACKS THE ABILITY TO TAKE GH TO THE NEXT LEVEL, WHERE WE OUGHT TO BE SIMPLY BECOS HE NEVER REACHED THERE HIMSELF AS A PLAYER. HE IS TOTALLY OBLIVIOUS TO THAT.

  12. coconutman says:

The Black Stars coaching staff is fine, we need some quality strikers, I really think Baffour not showing up for his call-up was a big blow for the Black Stars. I think Appiah made a mistake. Jordan struggled against Zambia in the African cup he should have given Clottey a chance to play against Zambia. Clottey is big and strong and is used to the African physical game. The coach should also consider bringing Warris for a practice game before the next qualifier he might turn out to be as good a discovery as Atsu. The coach has to do everything to bring back Gyan from retirement if necessary revoke his passport we need him bad for the next round of games. He should not be allowed to take any penalty kicks though. Christian Atsu should be starting in the next round of games.

Zambia is a fast team and the coaching staff should field their most athletic and most physical players. Finesse and volatile players should not be included because one red card and it is all over. That will exclude Boateng, Jordan and Vorsah from the starting line up.

  13. Anokwale says:

I find it interesting that people want to attack the coach. The simple truth is that Ghana lacks strikers. It is that simple. Unfortunately, Clottey was not that impressive at CHAN 2011 so I am not so sure about him. I would rather see a guy like Owusu-Abeyie brought on to play as a striker and see what he can do. I think that he might be the most dynamic player we have.

  14. Tony says:

Bro this are all the best players Ghana have currently and Ghanaians talk too much!!, the only problem Ghana had is our striking ability, we always talk about our striking ability but still remains the same,Abeyie to me is not any good ideal, but i think ghanaian should try and bring Gyan back

  15. kantoose says:

I mean what is wrong with Ghana? we have abundant midfielders so why cant we convert some of these to Strikers when the need call for it. I watched the Spain against italy yesterday and with Villa Injured, the manager was bold enough to play 4-6-0 the whle of First half. and guess what a midfielder by name of FABREGASSSSS SCORED the equalizer. What is wrong with placing QUINCY OR ATSU TSAWAM OR ANDRE AYEW A SPACE AHEAD OF THE OTHER MIDFIELDERS in situations where there is no Asamoah Gyan. We dont need to field unseasoned strikers such as Adiyiah or Jordan at all cost. i Hope someone listens. We always have to use the best of what we have. simple

  16. GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

    STARTING 11:
GOALIES: SAMMY ADJEI, ADAM K, DAN ADJEI
    DEFENDERS; OPARE, BOYE, VORSAH/JONATHAN M, AFFUL/D. ADY
    MIDFIELDERS: ABEYIE, ANNAN, BADU/YARTEY, ATSU/DEDE
    STRIKERS: BAFFOUR/CLOTTEY, MUNTARI

THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE SQUAD AKWASI APPIAH SHOULD TAKEN TO ZAMBIA, NOT LESS CONFIDENCE PLAYERS LIKE ADIYIA, JORDAN, ETCC…..

  17. Bigsaky says:

We have suspended Zambia’s sorrows!!! Come 6th september 2013, they will see where the power lies, we are going to do everything possible to silence the zambia football fans! If ghana should be level on points with zambia on 14th june 2013, then 6th sept 2013 would be the day of destiny for “GHANA v ZAMBIA”, Ghana wants a third consecutive world cup and zambia wants a first ever world cup, Go GHANA Go!!!

  18. Jojo says:

Ghanaians, Happy that another team drew with another, Just worry about your own team ( 90 minutes without a shot on target), The Ghana FA are trying to use the police assault nonsense to deflect attention from the teams Poor performamce, The Ghana Vs Zambia game will decide who tops the group, Ghana will be happy that they will be at home, But Zambia have always performed better away from home ( except in sudan were the temperatures are over 50 degree )..I am a Zambian but i would give Ghana these Tips for free, That Atsu boy should be in the starting line-up, Find a better Right back than the guy who played yesterday, Kwadwo Asamoah is not a winger, Sulley munthari was too slow thats why zambia used a quick midfielder in Felix Katongo ( Zambians knew the Ghana starting line-up on Wednesday thanks to some Ghanaian Journalists who were covering the team in south Africa )..Never adiyah as a lone striker as he is too small and cannot hold the ball, Ayew was too casual, He was playing as if he was wearing a suit and a tie and did’nt want his shoes to get dirty, Boye and vorsah are too slow for a defensive partnership ( The Arabs will tear you apart with that partnership ). Find a better coach (european).Tactically your coach is very poor..

  19. When are we playing our next matches.

  20. chipolopolo Dj says:

We r simply the african champions…friendly advise learn 2play fast foot if wen u playn wt us plus why r u clying 4old players like Gyan, Essien??v learn 2also groom da young players jas lik we’ve done. En nxt time we come 2Accra or Kumasi make sure u have sufficien en well maintained elevtricity arrangments, nowander u won Lesotho by dat big margin thei r nt used 2playing in da dark. Shame on ur govt en ur GFA!

  22. Fifa One says:

chipolopolo Dj You are a fool, who is old? and what makes you think your young Zambian players are better than our young players, they are playing in better teams in Europe and not that stupid leagues in the southern Africa where your teams cannot even do any better things in the Caf champions league

  23. Chipolopolo Fan says:

You people are so interesting, ALL OF YOU INCLUDING THE COACH made the mistake of using the lesotho game to make assessments.

Lesotho has never rily been good at footbal so that was a grave mistake.

You shud thank our team for beating you again bcoz they made u see th weaknesses in ur team

    Stop blaming the coach alone.

  24. CHERRY says:

Zambia is a very good team.Ghana too.Zambia vs Ghana in Ghana will be a draw game.Wait and see.But Zambia may beat Ghana in Ghana

  25. Samuel 9ja says:

Zambia is the best team in Africa 4 now.evry country gat it own time to reighn and the time 4 the likes of Nigeria,Egipt, ivory coast,Ghna,Cameroun, and Tunisia has gone…….zambia will qualify 4 the next round no doubt but i wish Ghana to qualify but not with this set of players….. I think Ghana should learn 4rm the mistake of Nigerian Super Eagle.no more big boy in Africa football again it all about strenght and speed and litle skils… No more small team again if the likes of Zambia can win the Naion cup that means they got what it takes to qualify whith their current squad and style of play…Ghana wake up learn from the mistakes of Cameroun, Nigeria and Egipt.
I wish my Super Eagles best of luck and back to form

  26. yaw says:

@ Jojo. well said. I support you 100%

  27. KOFI says:

@King.The next match will be played on 22nd March 2013. Ghana playing home against Sudan.
