Ghana's Africa Cup of Nations hopes in peril with Mali test

Ghana’s hopes at the African Nations Cup finals could be in severe peril if they fail to get a result against Mali in Port Elizabeth on Thursday.

Ghana, who squandered a two-goal lead against the Democratic Republic of Congo in their opening match, face a Mali side that top Group B after beating Niger 1-0 on Sunday.

Mali will also have the psychological advantage after they beat the Black Stars in the third place play-off at the last Nations Cup in 2012.

The match at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium will pit two young teams expected to play a prominent role in future competitions, but Ghana’s 2-2 draw with the Congolese raised questions over their inexperience and temperament at the highest level.

“I’ve had lots of information on them but it is important that we plan our own strategy and make sure that they don’t play,” Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah said on the eve of the match.

Also on Thursday, the Congolese will take on Niger, still seeking their first Nations Cup point.

Niger played a defensive game against Mali and held out until the last few minutes when they conceded the only goal of the game.

Niger’s defensive frailties are likely to be exploited by a DR Congo attack that is among the strongest at the tournament.

PLEASE A.A DO NOT GET AHEAD OF YOURSELF. PLAY WITH CAUTION. DO NOT FORGET THAT A DRAW WILL NOT BE AS BAD AS A LOST. mark keita out of the game. kudos blackstars.

  2. Viper says:

Asamoah Gyan definitely cannot be wasteful in this match that is sure. There is no margin for error, after missing some glorious chances against DRC.

  3. Union Leader says:

The Malians primarily will be playing for a draw. They see Ghana as the toughest side in the group. They re not stupid,a draw help their cause and they are aware of that. So don’t be surprise to see a packed Malian defence ,with a counter atacking football. And if they score first ,they will put even more men behind the ball. That’s why reports coming out of the Ghana camp that playmaker Asamoah will be deployed behind the Striker(s)is a welcome one. Strong wing play will also help our cause. AA needs to read this game and make suitable changes when needed. Go Black Stars ,Go !!

  4. Paa T says:

We in this position cos AA is using our National team to settle personal scores with the Ayew’s i still dnt understand why the Ayew bro are not in this team. Now from the starting line up it is clear we dnt hv option especialy up front and middfield. The players even though the r gud they lack charater something that the Ayews have.the only striker in this team is Asamoah Gyan who is also messing up.am not sure AA capability to read the game and effect approprate sub.i wish the BS all the best

  5. TT says:

Why do we put ourselves in a position like that? Fans have been calling out AA to select the right people but he refused, now look.
John Mensah is fine, Muntari is okay, Quincy is playing as well as Dede. Anyway, wishing the BS all the luck in the world.
