Kwesi Appiah believes he is getting back his match sharpness after grabbing a double in Cambridge United's emphatic 5-1 triumph at home to Oxford on Saturday.

The on-loan striker scored both his goals just before half time to put United's noses in front after the visitors had taken the lead. Efforts from Ryan Donaldson, Tom Elliott and Robbie Simpson completed the rout in front of the Sky Sports cameras in the second half.

Appiah was thrilled with his strikes and was only denied a hat-trick by a fingertip save from Ryan Clarke pushing an earlier drive on to the bar.

He said: "I was trying so hard to get three, believe me. It just wasn't quite meant to be, but I'm happy with the two nevertheless and a great team performance.

"I was injured for a little while so I've been working hard on my fitness and obviously it showed out there on Saturday.

"I've been putting the work in in training and kept going and the consistency has come through in the end.

"But we've worked hard in training to get in the right positions and be calm in those positions to put the ball in the back of the net.

"Last year when we were in the Conference, with no disrespect to the league you might get a few more chances down there, but you've to be clinical and take them in League Two.

"The last two games we've won, they're not easy games and we've done well to win them very convincingly, with no disrespect to those teams.

Ask Appiah what he was doing in his goal celebrations though, and he will admit even he did not know.

He said: "One of my mates messaged me in the morning and said `if you score, you've got to do some kind of dance'.

"The dance that I wanted to do, it couldn't quite click in my head, so I just started freestyling.

"Whatever it was, I was just making up as I went along. I lost my rhythm in the one I wanted to do and I've just gone for anything!"
