Ghanaian defender Mohammed impresses in South African League

Awal Mohammed an instant hit at Maritzburg United

Ghanaian defender Awal Mohammed is making waves in the South African top flight with Maritzburg United.

The 24-year-old joined the ‘Team of Choice’ in August haven helped Asante Kotoko to Premier League success last term.

Mohammed was voted the Best Defender at the end of the last Ghana Premier League campaign and is already proving his worth the the Premier Soccer League.

The former Fetteh Feyenoord Academy recruit has featured in all seven premier league games for Maritzburg where he has emerged Man-of-the-Match on a couple of occasions.

He however stays grounded and insists the best is yet to come.

“I came here (South Africa) as the Best Defender from Ghana and therefore I must live up to this billing,” Mohammed told GHANAsoccernet.com.

“I am currently getting a lot of plaudits for my performance and this motivates me to do even more.

“I was lucky I came here at the time I was still relatively active as it has helped me adjust to the environment here quickly but I aim at doing even more.”

Maritzburg are currently fourth in the PSL haven won three, drawn three and loss one.
