Posted On Wednesday, 6th February 2013

Ghana will meet Nigeria if they beat Burkina Faso on Wednesday night

By Patrick Akoto

Ghana will meet Mali in the third-place playoff of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations after falling to Burkina Faso in the semi-final on Wednesday.

Nigeria cruised to a 4-1 victory over Mali in Durban to reach the final for the first time in more than a decade.

Burkina Faso needed extra time and a penalty shootout to get past favourite Ghana in Nelspruit.

Burkina Faso won 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation, making it to the final for the first time.

This means Ghana will meet Mali in the third-place playoff in Port Elizabeth on Saturday while Nigeria take on Burkina Faso in the final on Sunday in Johannesburg.

  15. African Consciousness says:

Coach Appiah cost Ghana a place in the finals by using the same tired legs. I would like to see some of the bench players on the field come Saturday and not the same tired legs. Why play Paintsil until his body could not take it any more. The only reason why Gyan, Badu, Boye and K Asamoah made it through every minute of every game in the tournament is because they are younger. Coach please use your bench other wise you will lose another game and this time it will be against a team you have already beaten. Why did you not start Agyei when there was a potential that Ghana could be playing in a penalty shootout? Agyei is a winner who proved himself by winning the U20 World Cup.

Why bring along Kissi Boateng, Mohammed Awal, Boakye Yiadom, Anthony Annan, Agyei, Clottey, Adam, Akaminko if they will just warm the bench the whole tournament? Akaminko, Clottey and Annan were the lucky ones they got a little taste.

  16. African Consciousness says:

Agyei is noted to be more experienced goalie when it comes to penalties the media had this story out before the Burkina Faso game so Coach why not?
