The Ghana FA has confirmed Ebenezer Assafuah’s age being used at the African Youth Championships is a mistake.

The Liberty Professionals striker was reported as the youngest player at the tournament aged 14.

This raised a lot of eyebrows and suspicions over the correct ages of the Ghana U20 team in Algeria.

But the Ghana FA has come out to confirm Assafuah is not 14 years as captured in the CAF database but rather an 18-year-old.

“I think it was a mistake made by CAF and we have duly notified them,” Ghana FA Executive Committee Member Winfred Osei said.

“The boy’s year of birth on the passport is 1993 and not 98 as its being reported by CAF.

“He is definitely not a 14 year old and we have notified CAF of this mistake because this is breeding negative perceptions about the boy and Ghana football.

“So hopefully we will have this sorted out quickly so these perceptions can stop.”
