The Ghana FA has confirmed Ebenezer Assafuah’s age being used at the African Youth Championships is a mistake.

The Liberty Professionals striker was reported as the youngest player at the tournament aged 14.

This raised a lot of eyebrows and suspicions over the correct ages of the Ghana U20 team in Algeria.

But the Ghana FA has come out to confirm Assafuah is not 14 years as captured in the CAF database but rather an 18-year-old.

“I think it was a mistake made by CAF and we have duly notified them,” Ghana FA Executive Committee Member Winfred Osei said.

“The boy’s year of birth on the passport is 1993 and not 98 as its being reported by CAF.

“He is definitely not a 14 year old and we have notified CAF of this mistake because this is breeding negative perceptions about the boy and Ghana football.

“So hopefully we will have this sorted out quickly so these perceptions can stop.”

  2. marcelo says:

this can never be mistake they have reduce their ages and ask them to play like small boys 18,19 and 20yrs cannot play in the Ghanaian league.how come Adams was drop, they should give us a break is too much

  3. Kwaku Tee says:

The problem is our local players are not well paid, hence they don’t eat well. How can a player live on GH¢120/month?No wonder they are malnourished but team owners and some ignorant journalists are saying Ghanaian players have small physique.George Alhassan,Emmanuel Quarshie,Kofi Badu and most of the 1982 winning squad were all giants. How come the current players are all small in physique? Is it bcos of age cheating where 25 year old are paraded as under 20 players? Most Ghanaians who don’t play football are giants, look at Rawlings and John Kufour they are 6feet plus.Till we stop age cheating and do the right thing Black Stars will not win anything.
