Black Stars striker Abdul Majeed Waris powered Valenciennes to a crucial 1-0 win over Jonathan Mensah's Evian TG in the French Ligue 1 on Saturday night.

The 22-year-old grabbed the only goal of the game in the 62nd minute with a powerful finish as he enhanced Valenciennes chances of surviving relegation from the French top-flight.

The Spartak Moscow loanee forward had come close twice to scoring the opening goal in the first half but he was denied by the host keeper.

However his persistence paid off just after the hour mark when he maintained his resilience to shot home and inspire Valenciennes to victory.

Waris has been in top form for Valenciennes since joining them in Janaury and has scored contributed 6 goals so far in 10 league games in their bid to survive relegation.
