Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan wants to retain the Arabian Leagues Golden Shoe award at the end of the current campaign.

The Al Ain hitman won the prestigious award which is similar to the European Golden Shoe gong for the most goals scored in all the leagues in the gulf for the 2011-2012 season.

Gyan scored 21 goals in his debut season in the UAE top flight – a conversion rate of 0.954 goals per match in 22 games to beat closest rival Ahmed Hayel who won the top scorer award in the Jordanian top flight with 18 goals in 22 games.

The ex Sunderland star has however already surmounted his goal tally in his debut season – scoring 24 goals in 17 games this term, putting him well on track to winning the top scorer award for the second successive season in the UAE top flight.

The Ghana captain however faces stiff competition from Brazilian striker Grafite who is just one goal behind the Al Ain predator with seven games left to go.

But Gyan who is currently out injured with a thigh strain hopes to retain his individual honours by the time the season ends in two months time.

“The league is not over yet and I broke my record last season – 22 goals – and I hope to score more until the end of the season,” he said.

Gyan remains the top scorer in the UAE top flight despite missing six weeks of action die to his international commitments with the Ghana national team at the 2013 Nations Cup.
