Ghana sneak past Cape Verde 1-0 in friendly

Posted On Wednesday, 14th November 2012

Black Stars celebrate a goal

Ghana defeated Cape Verde 1-0 in a 2013 Africa Cup of Nations warm-up in Portugal on Wednesday.

A second-half pile-driver by Spain-based midfielder Mubarak Wakaso separated the two sides in the hotly-contested match at the University of Lisbon Stadium in the Portuguese capital.

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah gave the chance to several players on the fringes of the squad to impress before he names his squad for next year’s tournament in South Africa.

Even though most of the Black Stars who started the game are not the recognized first team players of the side, they dominated the first-half with some quick passing which confounded the Blue Sharks on several occasions.

On the few occasions when the Blues Sharks threatened they found the Ghanaian central defensive pair of Jerry Akaminko and Lee Addy in good form while goalkeeper Fatau Dauda was practically on holiday.

The Ghanaians created many scoring chances that brought out the best in goalkeeper Josimar Evora Dias while strong captain Fernando Maria Neves proved to be a pillar in the defence.

Defender David Addy lofted in a cross from the left on 11 minutes, creating some space at the edge of the box for captain Derek Boateng whose powerful shot was held by Dias at the second attempt.

Midfielder Nana Asare failed to connect Albert Adomah’s inviting cross four minutes later before Majeed Waris set up Wakaso whose thunderbolt was gathered by Dias.

But the agile Dias could not stop Wakaso’s second low drive in the 64th after striker Richmond Boakye Yiadom back-heeled the ball onto the path of the Espanyol enforcer.

Wakaso similar attempt four minutes later missed the target narrowly while the Sharks continued with their physical play which resulted in injury of Ghana defender Lee Addy .

This is the last match for the Black Stars before coach Kwesi Appiah names his squad for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Ghana have been drawn in Group B of the Africa Cup of Nations to face DR Congo, Mali and Niger.

Cape Verde will play hosts South Africa, Morocco and Angola in Group A of the competition.

The Blue Sharks will play the opening match of the tournament when they take on South Africa in the opening match of the competition on 19 January.

Ghana starting line-up:

Tru out yrs we have shown we can beat Ivory coast, but zambia is the country we need to beat, if Ghana is prove anything, lost to them twice which aint gud in a span of around a yr.

        • Seth Ampong says:

Zambia has beaten South Africa 1-0 at Soccer City in Johannesburg and lifts the Nelson Mandela Challenge trophy. They shown that they are trully African champions as they outplayed and outclassed Bafana Bafana at they backyard and SA were saved by a Swaziland referee who handled the game poorly as he denied the African champions a clear penalty in the 75th minute when Mbesuma was tripped up in penalty box.
However, it was a Zambia substitute, Collins Mbesuma, who broke the deadlock in the 64th minute with a fierce drive that ripped into the top corner of the net and gave Khune no chance whatsoever.
Ghana it will not be easy in SA 2013 AFCON to meet the Zambians as they were playing like a home team.

          • @9geria says:

And a lot of their supporters. It’s like SA is Zambia’s second home. When they scored, their supporters almost evaded the pitch. Security had to called in to contain them as they outnumbered SA supporters at Soccer city.

          • lolvfunny says:

I am surprised we are OK and happy with the way the Black Stars are playing in recent times. I know football is a team work but i think Wakaso stood out tall in yesterday’s game. I wasn’t impressed about the entire game. We need to get the right players into the squad. We also need to develop winning game plan. It looks as if everyone in the team wants to show his individual brilliance. That is not bad but our team need to play cohesively.

          • nana says:

@SA you are 100% right, guys I think we need to focus on what we saw yesterday before we comment on the other team.

            1. Watching the game yesterday I was dissappointed in a lot of the players and began to realise that even though this was the second team, the AFCON is actually going to be very difficult for us to win, the team did not dominate cape verde a team that we demolished with ease with the likes of essien, appiah even matthew Amoah around.

            2. The only player to who actually justified he should definately go and who could be an alternate to lets say a Muntari was Wakaso (what a player) he really did run the show. Also I do have to give a mention to Jerry Amakaio he also looked good. Sadly apart from these two players everyone else was quite dissapointing.

            3. I believe friendlys iswhere a manager experiments. Now Kwasi Appiah has clearly experiemented with different players in this match by why not also in the second half for example experiment with out formation. e.g a scenario where we may be losing a game in Afcon, how would we change our tactics. Waris was clearly in need of support up front yet the manager watched the small man struggle as he was isolated, by having possible richmond beside hime rather than replacing him could have unearthed a decent partnership, something alternative to Gyan, incase he is injured or not on form.

Argg well im not the coach but I beleieve it would have been invaluable to our future.

  3. Chidi says:

rubbish report,i saw that match and Cape Verde though very physical played better than the Black stars…the match itself was scrappy.

  4. Maxwell Johnson says:

Wakaso man of the match, no doubt about that. He played very well especially in the second half and also capped his performance with a brilliant match winner. We could have scored more if Atsu was brought on earlier, RBY also looked very promising when he came on despite missing some 1 or 2 decent chances that came his way.

Warris didn’t do that badly, there more room for improvement. D. Boateng was not that bad either, but he risks not making the cut for the AFCON 2013 due to his in-activeness @ club level, Inkoom & Lee Ardey shouldn’t be invited again.

  5. Ezekiel Obiba says:

I tink we have a future but pls AA shuld not include Inkoom in de final 23 squard, infact de guy sucks on de field of play.He needs to move to another club and play active futball.

  6. real sabacious says:

hahahahaha spot on maxwell, when i started calling for the inclusion of ´wakaso in the stars, some wankers on this site were attacking me but we all saw the player he’s today.very dominant with technic.a good player doesn’t need 20 chances to prove him self.derek, akaminko and adomah all did quite well.lee addy and inkoom has no business been in the team.i was expecting much from david addy but he dissapointed me.i believe nana akwasi is the man to solve the problematic leftback.once again congrat wakaso!

    • KWAME PITO says:

SABA, I Kwame Pito was among the first to vigilant for the call of MUBARAK WAKAKSO, Just like you. I have no idea if these GFA boys know or watch International football at all. IF THEY HAVE ANY IDEA, THE NEXT PLAYER THEY WILL BE GALLANTING FOR IS DEPAY, the guy is just 19 but plays just like WAKASO on the right side of attack. Instead of GFA going for Karim Bellarabi who is nowhere near Depay in abilities. The Guy is 19 so GFA should throw all resources at getting him to CAP, by the time he is 23 he is already a pillar in blackstars unlike KPB who just arrived from nowhere into the team.

By the way if we take inkoom to AFCON we will concede some cheap goals in defence. He has not learnt from his mistake against Zambia in last years Afcon.

      • lolvfunny says:

I think we also lack a lot of intelligence in our games. It is as if some of the players were told to volley the ball when their legs touches it without spotting when the key positions for success are

        • lolvfunny says:

********I think we also lack a lot of intelligence in our games. It is as if some of the players were told to volley the ball when their legs touch it without spotting where the key positions for success are

      • nana says:

thank you real sab, depay is the man we should be after not karim.

Wakaso is a real talent, I too have been singing his praises from the days he broke into the villareal team, he is gaining a reputation is spain for these long range goals, long may it continue.

  7. Ezekiel Obiba says:

Hope you keep it up and continue to behave like a human being from now on.

  10. abudu says:

Well done mubarak. Akwasi Appiah pls Waris n Boakye r nt up to standard in mature. Our strikers for afcon are Gyan , Adiyiah , J. Ayaw , clottey

  11. dadaba gonshots says:

not sure what I was watching.

We had short strikers, meanwhile we were trying to attack from wings with crosses?

atsu will be a great player

    • afrikaba1 says:

atsu didnt do well when he he came, he struggled to go pass the defenders who were very physical. may be akwasi appiah should keek him on the right flank where its easy to cut in and confuse defenders and still fingers crossed for Quincy on the left flank, ayew/ asamoah through the middle.

  13. Ghanaman says:

ZAMBIA 1 SOUTH AFRICA 0,IVORY COAST 3 AUSTRIA 0,GABON 2 PORTUGAL 2.Hmn this next year’s AFOCN gonna be tough.Only God knows the winner.

  14. bujuu says:

True talk Abudu. So bcos of dis two strikers u want to reject Adiyiah n j Ayew. Dis guys (Waris n boakye) plays in lower league in Europe n u want them to leads us afcon. Mr Akwasi use mature n experience strikers like Gyan Adiyiah j.Ayew n Clottey for dis we can win Afcon

  15. junior mafia says:

very Physical game..wakaso terrific game most outstandn player on sa pitch he got even better wen derick boateng went off had da chance to advance more….defence was excellnt they were not intimidated by da height of da blue sharks.atsu makin a fool of defenders as usual.good game wakaso good game.AA put ur list out

  16. yvonne says:

i fink its abt tym we lower our expectations regarding the black stars. i ve realised dat Ghana as a nation do well wen the odds re against us… lyk afcon 2010 wen milo used our U-20 world youth champions to get to the finals, lyk wen our black maidens won bronze at the jst ended women’s world cup, lyk South africa 2010. its abt tym we kept our fingers crossed 2 wait 4 wat is in stock 4 us. let the underdog champions make all the noise they possibly can. lets play it cool n by the tym they realise, akwasi has done the unthinkable to win the cup. I see it comin

  17. Ghanaba says:

Well people I must have spoken too soon. It looks like the FAGGOT KOJO MOSCOW has relapsed into his animalistic nature once again. Or Kojo have just gone back to your SNIFFING(COCAINE)WAYS once again? Or poor you. You are lost forever, Kojo Stalin.

  18. danny alvez says:

i dont believe ghana can win next years afcon so we should stop dreaming.we still dont have a team to win a cup,if i ask you to tell the first eleven players for blackstars, nobody knows.

  19. Maxwell Johnson says:

@ Bujuu & Abudu, you both are BUNCH of jokers!! What’s the standard of the Ukranian league? Apart from Shakhtar Donetsk & Dynamo Kiev who play regularly and do well in European competitions every season the rest of their clubs are all mediocre.

The Italian Serie B is much stronger and competitive than the Ukranian League and I can boldly tell you that both Warris & RBY are 1000 x better than Adiyiah.

Though I agree that the Swedish Allsvenskan is not a stronger league in Europe, at least Warris has scored lotta goals in that league and also emerged as the goal-king as well as the best player in the just ended season unlike your player Adiyiah who has only managed to score jux 4 goals in the last 4 yrs of his European career. The 4 strikers for the AFCON should be Jordan, RBY, Warris & Gyan period!!

  20. Carl Lewis says:

Chidi.i think ur insane, adamant and recarlcitrant.Learn how to talk in ur website, abnormal person.

  21. Christo says:

Danny don’t you know? Kojo Moscow is a COCAINE JUNKIE! He lacks human instincts. All he does is use this internet to cure his depression. He is a big time loser and is looking for attention and recogniton. So unable to think or write anything sensible, all he does is insult and attack those who are smarter than him. He has been banned from Ghanaweb so now he wants to use Ghanasoccernet to vent his depression on others. I think Ghanasoccernet editor has recognised him. Don’t you see his statement is still at the bottom of the pile? Let’s not make him feel comfortable. But expose him for what he is, a big time loser so that he will take his shit that he wants to pour here to his slum dwelling.

  22. Fiifa 1 says:

Kojo Moscow, you are indeed a fool and uncivilized, why do you always comes to this forum to insult your fellow forumites? where were you brought up, from your childhood days? who brought you up? i am sure it is not your loving and matured parent, but rather your own stupid attitude by deciding not to be respective to any one here?. I know you will come back with an insulting comment, but i don’t care because i am really convinced that there is something wrong with you thinking abilities and you need to go to psychiatrist to check on your Phronesis level.

  23. dread says:

derek boateng, inkoom, lee addy and clottey should be dropped.Quincy!!!!!!

  24. kimco says:

real question is what is wrong with this forum? Going on about how the league makes the player. U could have a striker coming from the glo league who’s better than one from the european ones. It all about team chemistry and character. Our ”experienced” strikers seem to lack the techniques and zeal to be labeled worthy.
And lastly pls people, really do stop saying, ”or whatever u call urself” it makes it really hard to take any post that comes after that seriously. I mean, the dudes name is just on on top of his post, just read it or better yet, highlight it, copy and paste. How hard can that be?

  25. selfmade says:

Is about time u realised that atsu though talented is not there yet and we have players who can help us tremendously and one of such player is quincyowusu abeyie!!! One thing i have noticed about Ghana games are that we struggled a lot to build attack from the middle esp against opponents who packed the bus and we therefore concentrate most of our attacks from the flanks but the end product ( perfect crosses) leaves much to be desired and this is why we need a better and experienced player like quincy!! In ghana 2008 against nigeria, his perfect cross from the left flank found essien to equalized for us which lifted us up to eventually win the match!! Against drogbas ivory coast,he single handler torn the ivorian defence into straws to scored his first goal for Ghana and that was a wonderful solo goal which am sure a lot of ghanaian players can’t replicate!!! If worst comes to worst, quincy can changed our game than any of our current bs players and none can tell me anything different!!! We need him more than he needs us and i think we should invite him now because posterity ll never ever forgive us if he is sidelined again! The coach has said he want committed players and quincy has shown enough of this to be called into the national team!! Upon all the bad treatments that has being melted to this dude,he still want to featured for us an there is no commitment better than this!!! Appiah,if u truly want to earn our uttermost respect,do the right thing by inviting quicny and i can bet u,u ll forever be rewarded!!! Viva the revolutioncioool!!!!

  26. anokwale says:

I think they did just enough to win. Mubarak was great but the rest of the team was going through the motions. This was decent but there is still room for growth. The positive is that we have discovered that Mubarak is a big time player who stays active.

  27. access says:

We hope Kwesi Appiah and GFA will invite Quincy ….

  28. luckman says:

Call samuel Afum pls . he can deliver

  29. Adua says:

Cape Verde are what you call minnows of the minnows and we beat dem…..whaaaaat?????

  30. bright says:

it going to be this Gyan,Boakye,j ayew and warris

  31. Dr Who says:

Gyan,Waris,Yiadom and Jordan should go to AFCON.Dauda,Derick,Wakaso and Akaminko did ok.one of my worries is the height of Waris and Akaminko.Nana Akwesi Asare was played out of position so he was just average.

  32. Great says:

Well, not bad show frm de bs. M. wakaso n d.boateng made de difference de night. The rest who played must all lift up their play.our main problem continues to be quality strikers.AA shd choose critically other 2 strikers to join A.gyan and J.ayew for de AFCON.

  33. KWAME PITO says:

I watched Zambia against S. Africa yesterday, those guys are good because they know each other very well. Great team cohesion so their positioning is very good. Although they have no huge superstars but they are hardworking on he pitch and combined with their good team cohesion. That is why they always win by a single goal because once they play cohesive game and they get a single goal, You cannot score against them easily and they also do not have prolific strikers so the game ends up as 1:0. They will be the team to beat at Afcon. I’m starting to respect them. At the moment they have the best Goal keeper in Africa in mwenye. That goalie is full of confidence. Zambia is looking like a dangerous team.

    • KWAME PITO says:

This is why Appiah should play his team together for sometime before the Afcon. It dont matter even if we are playing a lower tier side, A.A YOU SHOULD USE YOUR SELECTED TEAM PLAYERS CONTINOUSLY FROM NOW ON.

  34. Headman Uzo -Chief Tembwe says:

I thought Ghana will white wash the underdogs -Cape Verde.
I am not comfortable with the results as Ghana did not play like the super team. It was on equal basis.

  35. A.rahim says:

i am living in eu, when im feeling boring i just go to ghanasoccernet to have some funs also to read about the man peoples in ghana with their comments to each other, expecialy kojo moscow vs Ezekiel obiba

  36. A.rahim says:

i mean the mad peoples in ghana with thei comments

  37. Amos Zambia says:

I watched the GHana game and my advice to Ghanians is not to raise their expectation too high.Your team has a lot of work to do.You are a collection of brilliant individuals and not yet a team.

  38. Proudly African says:

Ghanaians, stones are also waiting for you in south africa and don’t say you were not warned. Check out the website below

  40. dob says:

All those those hating on these players its nt as if wen u are put on the field oc play u can do any better, its so disgusting how some of u will jux comment and insult inkoom even if the topic is not about him. Gosh its time to check on ur poor lives and how to eat in and day haters, he doesnt give a damn if u hate him or not after All he doesnt borrow from ur shallow pocket to feed his house hold. Get a lofe fools, and leave him the hell alone, the game he played yesterday compared to opare’s game in Ghana, who is ahead of each other? liers and haters will always remain as broke and dirty as y’all asses! fools!!

  41. dob says:

Y’all at this Ghana soccernet are fools, u neva post a comment that tells the truth or praises inkoom, wen ppl insult him u dnt delete it,u put it up but u hate to see him being praised,God will punish u all, stop lieing to ppl, u urself put up the comments up wit different names, hypocrites! so why did u delete my comment? y’all will rot in hell Poverts!!

  42. Desmond says:

SOMETIMES WE SHOULD BE CIVIL WITH OUR COMMENTS.THE GAME WE PLAYED YESTERDAY BROUGHT SOME FEW TALENTS OUT WHICH WILL BE USEFUL DURING THE AFCON SOUTH AFRICA GAME.FOR ME FOUR PLAYERS WERE OUTSTANDING DEREK BOATENG,WAKASO,WARRIS AND AKAMINKO.DEREK BOATENG WAS EVERYWHERE IN THE MIDFIELD,HE WAS GOOD WITH THE AREA BALLS,AIR BALLS AND HIS PASSING WAS INCREDIBLE.HE WAS INDEED DISTRIBUTING THE BALL TO EVERY ANGLE,THAT IS WHAT WE NEED IN OUR MIDFIELD.WAKASO WAS ALSO MARVELLOUS HE RUN AND ENERGY AND BRILLIANCE TO WIN 50/50 BALLS WERE GOOD.WAKASO CAN EASILY PLACE KWADWO ASAMOAH OR PLAYER JUST BEHIND OUR STRIKERS….SECONDLY WHAT WORRIES ME IS JORDAN AYEW…JORDAN IS A VERY GOOD PLAYER IF AA COULD PLACE THIS BOY AT A GOOD POSITION HE WILL HELP CHANGE IN SCORING MORE GOALS.I LIKE WARRIS FOR ONE FACT,THOUGH HE DIDNT SCORE HE KEPT THE DEFENDERS ON THEIR TOES AND WAS TACKLING EVERYONE.WE CAN MAKE IT IN AFCON IF ONLY WE PLACE OUR PLAYERS AT POSITIONS WHICH THEY LOVE TO GIVE THEIR BEST FOR THEIR COUNTRY.DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHY THE ZAMBIA GIVE THEIR BEST WHEN PLAYING BECAUSE THEIR COACH IS AN INSPIRATIONAL COACH,HE IS ALWAYS KEEN ON MAKING EVERY PLAYER PLAY HIS POSITION WELL….HE IS NOT OUT LOOKING FOR WORLD CLAD PLAYERS BUT THE LOCAL PLAYERS HE HAS HE KEEPS ON SCREEN THEM AND INSPIRING THEM ,THAT IS WHAT OUR COACH NEEDS TO DO.HE SHOULD BE AN INSPIRATIONAL COACH.

  43. Kojo Moscow says:

You are blind Desmond!Derek Boateng who is almost 40 years is your player?Infact you are MAD!
