Ghana equals Nations Cup record with Cape Verde win

Posted On Saturday, 2nd February 2013

Ghana fans enjoyed the win over Cape Verde

Ghana equaled the Africa Cup of Nations record of consecutive semi final berths after a 2-0 victory over Cape Verde on Saturday in Port Elizabeth.

A second half brace by midfielder Mubarak Wakaso ensured the Black Stars join Nigeria as the most successful team in the history of the prestigious competition to make the last four on four consecutive occasions.

This is a repeat of what Ghana did in the 1963, 1965, 1968 and 1970 tournaments.

Egypt hold three consecutive qualifications to the semi finals during their dominant era where they won three Nations Cup titles on the bounce between 2006-2010.

The Black Stars will now await their semi final opponents which will be the winner of Sunday’s quarter final tie between Burkina Faso and Togo.

The team could even go further in achieving another milestone by ending a staggering 31-year trophy drought by winning the tournament in South Africa.

Impressive record indeed, but its the trophy that we need. Our performance today was very abysmal even though we won, we nearly paid the price for underestimating the Cape Verdeans. However I don’t think we’ll play poorly like this in the semis but we really gotta step up our game, the in-consistence performances is really becoming a worry. A.A shine your eye waaaa sake of wanna (Ghanaians) eyes make red waaa, he be the trophy we dey want.

Our tactical approach to this very match was easily predictable.
We are destine to win the cup else this was not our day…we need to wake up.

Congrats Ghana, we Zambians admire one thing about your team and thats consistency.

However, dont u think its better for u not to reach the semis and finals sometimes but then when u do u actually win the cup?

  8. hahaha @okonjo i like your comment..yeah its the fact that Ashanti Gold should better start hunting for another goal keeper,Dauda is already no more their’s,i tell you…we really need the cup and not just a record setting…A.appiah should do something to avert that abysmal performance we put up today..well,we won the game and that what matters, who knows maybe that was one of A.Appiah’s tactis to have a win over stubbon Cape Verdeans..
