Ghana have been considered one of the strongest African football sides for years now, coming up with strong showings at both the 2006 and 2010 World Cups.

The Black Stars are hoping for at least their third straight appearance in the knock-out stages at Brazil 2014. Ghana beat the Czech Republic and the United States at Germany 2006 before losing to record champions Brazil in the round of 16.

In South Africa, the Black Stars were the only African side to advance from the group stage. They then beat the United States again before falling to Uruguay in a penalty shoot-out in the quarterfinals.

Despite losses during the African Cup of Nations to Burkina Faso and Mali and an unsatisfactory fourth place finish, Ghana football officials decided to keep manager James Kwesi Appiah on board.

World Cup qualification was a bumpy road but Ghana eased past Egypt 7-2 on aggregate in the play-offs to book their ticket to Brazil.

If the West Africans want to accomplish anything big in Brazil, they will need superb performances from the likes of Chelsea star Michael Essien, Kwadwo Asamoah from Juventus, Schalke's Kevin-Prince Boateng and Asamoah Gyan.
