Ghana became the first country to reach the quarter-finals of the Women's U17 World Cup on Tuesday when beating highly-fancied Germany 1-0 at the tournament in Costa Rica.

Gladys Amfobea scored her first goal at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup as the Black Maiden reached the last eight of the competition.

The right-back headed in a free kick in the 43 minute of the first half to hand the Black Maidens their second-straight victory in Group B.

With six points from two games, coach Augustine Adotey's side becomes the first team at the finals in Costa Rica to advance to the next stage.

The European champions came close to levelling but goalkeeper Azume Adams pulled some great saves to maintain another clean sheet.

Ghana almost suffered a 10th minute scare when Thai referee Pannipar Kamnueng flashed the red card at Jane Abambila for a challenge on a German player.

The referee quickly rectified her error and pulled out a yellow card rather.

In the 11th and 26th minutes, Azume was on hand to keep out a free kick and tipped over her bar a thumping header by Lea as hurler.

With two minutes remaining to end the half, Amfobea found space at the far post to power a header past a diving Vivien Brandt.

The goal scorer almost doubled it for Ghana in the second half when her free kick cannoned off the crossbar.

The game generated into an end-to-end action but the Germans came close a couple of times and with all their breaks, Azume and the back line built around captain Amina Fuiseni thwarted all their efforts.

Ghana will play Canada in the final group fixture on Saturday in Tibas.
