Ghana legend Mohammed Polo urges caution ahead of South Africa showdown

Published on: 27 January 2015

Legendary Mohammed Polo is preaching caution ahead of Ghana’s decisive Africa Cup of Nations group C game against South Africa on Tuesday.

The two countries go at each other faced with a must-win situation to progress to the quarter-finals.

The Black Stars have suddenly been buoyed by their memorable 1-0 win over favourite Algeria to advance to the last eight of the tournament.

South Africa themselves, bottom of the group, have a realistic chance of qualifying if they can negotiate win against the West Africans.

Former Hearts coach Mohammed Polo has urged the team to eschew complacency ahead of the crucial decider.

“We cannot afford to be complacent at this time. We cannot say that the fact that they (South Africa) lost to Algeria and we beat Algeria, we will automatically beat them,” he said

“Football is not mathematics. It doesn't work that way. We must go out there with a renewed spirit and mind ready to die for the nation.

“I am confident we can win but the win will not come on a silver platter. The South Africans are playing fantastic football and will cause many problems for us.

“We must be careful to adhere to our strategy.”
