Ghana leader John Dramani Mahama is confident that the Black Stars will overcome the 'Group of Death' at the 2014 World Cup and excel in the global tournament in Brazil in June.

President Mahama, who is  a die hard Black Stars supporter, hailed the Black Stars for overcoming several difficulties to make a third-straight qualification to the 2014 World Cup in November.

The country's leader made these observations in his New Year message to the nation on Tuesday night in Accra.

H.E. Mahama, who is a die hard Black Stars supporter, congratulated the senior men's national team for making it a third-straight qualification to the 2014 World Cup.

"I congratulate our Black Stars for qualifying for Brazil 2014," President Mahama said.

"Our gallant [Black] Stars have risen to the occasion, again and again even in times when we have doubted their ability to overcome the odds."

Ghana are placed in one of the toughest groups for the tournament in Brazil where they are paired with Germany, the United States and Portugal.

President Mahama said the Ghana team do not lack the quality to advance past the group stage despite the presence of world class players in the German and Portuguese teams.

"We are in a formidable group but the Black Stars are a formidable team too and remember the adage, when the going gets tough, the tough gets going," he said.

"I believe that once again the [Black] Stars will shine in Brazil and make us proud."

Ghana will open their campaign against the United States before playing Germany and Portugal.
