Ghana beat Malawi 2-0 in Accra in the first leg 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier
Ghana beat ten-man Malawi 2-0 on Saturday to gain first leg ascendency in the final 2013 Africa Cup of Nations first leg qualifier.
The four-time continental champions put up a stirred second-half display to win back the fans after a tepid first 45 minutes.
Christian Atsu turned in Andre Ayew’s goal-bound shot inside the 18-yard box for the opener.
It began with a nice play from captain Asamoah Gyan who teed up Marseille midfielder Andre and the FC Porto player was clinical with the finishing.
Midfielder Anthony Annan added the second with a powerful shot from 20-yards in the 54th minute.
The Osusuna player skipped past his marker on the right before unleashing a thunderbolt past goalkeeper Simplex Nthara.
The Flames nearly snatched the equalizer when Anthony Annan gave away possession close to the box but striker Atusaye Nyondo.
Ghana could have shot ahead in the opening minute but Gyan was sluggish upfront.
Malawi had chunk of possession in the first half lacked the cutting edge with striker Nyondo.
After the break, Ghana looked revitalized after coach Kwesi Appiah lubricated his midfield by introducing FC Dnipro man Derek Boateng who replaced Jordan Ayew.
Man-of-the match Atsu was denied a double when his low grounder hit the goal post with goalkeeper Simplex completely beaten.
Malawi’s quest to get an important one goal was thwarted when defender James Sangala was show exit for a second yellow card offence in the 83rd minute.
Substitute Emmanuel Clottey could have scored his first first team goal but decided to go for power and he could have laid a pass for Atsu to finish off.
The return leg will be played in Lilongwe on October 12.
The winner of the two-legged tie will play at the finals to be hosted by South Africa next January.
Ghana line-up:
Adam Kwarasey- Daniel Opare, John Boye, Isaac Vorsah, Harrison Afful-Anthony Annan, Kwadwo Asamoah, Christian Atsu, Jordan Ayew/Derek Boateng, Asamoah Gyan/Emmanuel Clottey, Kwadwo Asamoah, Andre Ayew/Solomon Asante.
Atsu man of da match..wack first half da 2nd was much better..
if U ARE PLAYING LOCAL FRICAN TEAMS, USE MORE LOCAL PLAYERS AND VICE VERSA. HOW DO U EVEN START JORDAN AYEW OVER CLOTTEY? APPIAH IS A DUMB COACH. I KEEP TELLING U THAT GYAN IS NOT CAPTAIN MATERIAL. GIVE THE BAND TO ANNAN. HOW CAN A PRIDUCT FROM SAUDI LEAGUE…LEAGUE BANZA WEI BE CAPTAIN OF GH?
You are rather as dumb as dumb can be. Did appiah win the match or not?
KWASIA KAY, U ARE JUST AS DUMB AS THE COACH. WE ALSO BEAT LESOTHO AT HOME AND WAT HAPPND WHEN WE WENT TO ZAMBIA? WELL, GH MANAGED LESS THAN 3 SHOTS ON GOAL IN THE ENTIRE 90 MINUTES. DO U REMEMBA? ABOA JIMIFUO!
EVEN A PREMIER SIDE COULD HAVE BEATEN MALAWI AT HOME. THE POINT IS APPIAH IS NOT A SEASONED HEAD COACH AND HAS MILES TO GO. IN THE 4 GAMES HE HAS COACHED GH, DO U RECALL ANY OF HIS GAME STRATEGIES OR TACTICS? WATCH COACHES LIKE MOURINHO, FERGUSION, DI MATTEO, SHEHATA, GURADIOLA N RIGHT OF THE BAT U SEE THEIR TACTICS N GAME TIME STRATEGIES.WITH JAMES AKWASI, ALL I SEE IS A BUNCH OF CLASS 2 PLAYERS PLAYING…GUTTER TO GUTTER, SMALL POLES…
Akwasi Appiah you are still yet to convince us you are up to the task. u can do much better. this was Malawi and the team still wasn’t at their best.
Misleading headline. At what minute was Malawi reduced to 10 men?
It seems you didn’t watch the game. Didn’t you see the red card? Open your eyes before you criticize.
The red card happened when it was only 10 minutes left. The headline suggests we beat them only after they were down to 10 men. Misleading headline.
Ghana beat 11 man malawi by two goals to zero before they were reduced to ten men with only 6 minutes left to play. did this reporter even watch the game?
Good point.
I believe the heading is deceiving. Malawi was no pushover. They played well. Their goalie made a great save on Gyan’s free kick. The post saved them on an Atsu strike that was destined to go in. By the way, the local players had their chance. Clottey missed an open attempt from and angle. Solomon Asante was active and looked good. GTV coverage was terrible…transmission was in and out.
say it again Alex..i didnt watch the match so when i read the headline .i thought they played with 10men from first half to the end until i read that they played with 10 men from the 83rd minute
GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! You are a real moron… Coach Appiah is one of the best we have had in years!!
really,u think so. in the 4 games he has coached the gbstars, name 1 game where u truly saw appiah strategies at work. u are the real moron! if u think gh can play like this in malawi, then u must be dreaming. under this same appiah, gh went to zambia HAD LESS THAN 3 SHOTS ON GOAL IN 90 MINUTES. ABOA FUNU
you this guy calling yourself GH FUO, you talk like a headless goat! How many goals did Blackstars score against lowly Botswana at the recent Afcon when the serbian coach was in charge? You think playing football against African opponents is the same as playing on the international stage. I have just one question for your dumb ass, where did the brazillian Coach get south Africa to after all the money they wasted on him? YOU SPEW SO MUCH TRASH AND THE FACT NO ONE REPLIES TO YOU DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE MAKING SENSE! Liberia just held nigeria to a draw. CAR just beat cameroon 2:0
you think GHANA IS SPAIN, STOP TICKLING YOURSELF AND GIVE GODDAMN CREDIT!
U DUMB IDIOTIC ADWEE/MONKEY!. WAT IS UR POINT? WAT DOES UR STUPID QUESTION HVE TO DO WITH APPIAH N HIS LACK OF TACTICAL STRATEGIES DISPLAYED ON THE FIELD BY THE PLAYERS HE HAND PICKED? WHY DONT U GO N ASK S AFRICA, NIGERIA N IVORY COAST THAT QUESTION? HASNT GH ALSO WASTED GARGANTUAN SUMS OF MONEY ON DUMB COACHES? U THINK ITS ABOUT THE COLOR OR NATIONALITY OF THE COACH. IT NOT. ITS ABOUT WIN AND TROPHIES. I DOTN CARE IF A MONKEY IS HIRED AS GH COACH. AS LONG AS WE PLAY SMART SOCCER, WIN CONVINCINGLY AND CONSISTENTLY, BRING HOME TROPHIES. WE WILL ALL BE HAPPY. BUT TO TELL ME U ARE CONTENT WITH THIS D MINUS GRADE OF COACHING EXHIBITED BY APPAIH IS MEDIOCRE AND QUITE PATHETIC, KWAME. WHO GAVE U THE NAME KWAME? KWAME FUO ARE SMART, NOT U….THE SAME APPIAH COACHED GH TO BEAT LESOTHO 7 NOTHING N THEN WE GO TO ZAMBIA AND CANT EVEN MANAGE MORE THAN 3 SHOTS ON GOAL IN OVER 90 MINUTES? GO N WATCH THE GH VS. ZAMBIA GAME AWAY. IF WE GO TO MALAWI N PLAY ANYWHERE LIKE THIS, WE WILL LOSE! MARK IT ANYWHERE U HEADLESS CHIMPANZEE.
Good performance. Atso my man of the man. Hope to get at least 1-O at their home.
Charismatic Christian Attractive Atsu…Man of the Match performance.
Dede, must step up his game.
Jordan, below par performance too much ‘k3kye’ this was an important match. Warris or Yiadom are options.
Gyan, looked rusty upfront. Clottey could have come earlier.
Boateng should mostly be a sub. he changed the game altogether.
Annan was superb.
Not the scoreline I was expecting but not bad.
MY OPINION…
Atsu did well 2day ,wish him all de best
JORDAN IS NOT RIPE FOR GBSTAR!
HE JOINEED MARSEILLE IN 2009. FROM 2009 TILL 2012, JORDAN HAS PLAYED IN 78 GAMES, SCORED 10 GOALS IN ALL COMPETITIONS. THAT MEANS ON AVEARGE IN
3 YRS AT MARSEILLE, JORDAN SCORES 1 GOAL EVERY 7 0R 8 GAMES, WITH 26 GAMES PER SEASON.
WEI Y3 STRIKER?….MUHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAA. SHIP HIM TO METEORS OR SATTELITES TO EARN HIS
STRIPES. I CANT BELIEVE APPAIH STARTED JORDAN OVER CLOTTEY AGAINST MALAWI. I MEAN, HOW?
WAKASO, ABEYIE, NANA ASARE, ENOCH ADU KOFI, GOALKEEPER BRAIMAH, YARTEY, DAVID ADDY. COACH AA, CALL THEM ALL, AND DUMP DEREK BOATENG, INKOOM
AND JORDAN UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
Y’all make no sense. Y’all think playin soccer is a joke. Y’all keep y’all month shout. As a matter of fact, all we need is a win and we fortunately won, let’s all be strong and see what happens in Malawi folk. Stop hitting on each other.
I’m sure Ghana would have beat Malawi 4 or 5 – 0 if coach Appiah start Clottey ahead of Jordan. Let’s see second leg. Bravo Black Stars
Honestly I agree with GH FUO that Jordan is not ripe to start our games ahead of Clottey or even Waris. He is too fragile and hangs on the ball too much.Secondly, lets give credit to Coach Appiah for the win. This Malawians had been in camp for over two wks so they had understanding of each other.Akwesi had all our players for only 4 days. This Flames lack the necessary bite to beat us at their backyard. What did they achieve with their possession & aggression? You see the Black Stars like this but its difficult to beat us with more than a goal.Somebody should tell me the last time we lost an away qualifier to an African team with a two goal margin? Malawi is simply out and we are at AFCON 2013…PERIOD!
One should note that there is no weak team. Malawi actually looked good. In addition, I just watched their neighbors, Mozambique, beat Morocco 2-0. They actually scored both goals with a man down. The Southern African countries are starting to pick up their game.
