Ghana facing John Boye injury blow for AFCON

Ghana are anxiously waiting to find out if their most dependable defender John Boye will miss next month's Africa Cup of Nations because of injury.

The France-based defender has suffered a right thigh injury just six weeks before the tournament starts in South Africa.

The Rennes centre-back, who was among the Black Stars best performers at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, suffered the injury while playing for his club over the weekend.

He was taken off in the 64th minute of their league match against Troyes.

Doctors have now revealed that he suffered a right thigh injury which will rule him out of action for some time.

However, the club's medical officers will conduct further tests on the thigh to reveal how long he would be out for.

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah will be anxiously waiting to see how long the defender will be out for as he prepares to name his squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Several other Ghana players have been on the injury list with central defenders Isaac Vorsah and Jonathan Mensah just recovering from injury while these are fitness concerns for key midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang Badu.

With Ghana expected to name its squad before Christmas, coach Appiah will be caught in a fix as to the situation with Boye unless he has been cleared by the Rennes medical team.

His absence will be a blow to the Black Stars title ambitions as Boye has been one of Africa's best defenders in Europe over the past two seasons.

Boye won the man-of-the-match award in Ghana's opening match at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations against Botswana.

Ghana have been drawn in Group B against DR Congo, Mali and Niger.
