Ghana FA pity Welbeck for England choice

The Ghana FA has expressed its pity for Danny Welbeck over his decision to choose England over the Black Stars.

The Manchester United striker has been at the centre of a tug-of-war between England, where he was born, and Ghana, his parents’ homeland.

But the 20-year-old was given his first senior England call-up just 12 hours before the friendly between the two sides at Wembley a move seen by many as the ploy to tie him down.

With strikers like Wayne Rooney, Andy Carroll, Darren Bent, Jermaine Defoe, Peter Crouch still available for England he could end up rotting on the Three Lions bench.

Ghana FA vice-president says he could be dumped after being tied by the England national team.

"I felt sorry for him and I hope they are going to make good use of him and they will not dump him after this game," Pappoe told Joy FM.

"I wonder whether he really took a lot time to reflect over the issue because what I know is that he was just given an invitation about 24 hours to the game.

“I don’t think one makes a very good choice within such period of time but it's his career so I wish him the best.

Pappoe insists Welbeck’s decision not to play for Ghana is not a loss for the Black Stars are there are many talented players in the country.

"It is absolutely not a loss. Ghana does not run short of talent,” Pappoe said.

“We don't have any shortage of talents. We have talents all over the place if Danny decides to play for England fair enough for him."
