South Africa-based experienced defender John Paintsil says he wants a place in Ghana's 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil in the summer.

The 32-year-old, who currently plays for South African second-tier side Santos, has not been called up into the Black Stars since the 2013 African Cup of Nations.

The former Fulham man has enjoyed regular playing time at Santos since he joined on a two-year deal at the start of the season.

And the experienced right-back believes he can challenge for a place in Kwesi Appiah’s squad ahead of the World Cup in Brazil.

“Of course I am playing and will be glad to return to the national team,” Pantsil told Happy FM

“The national team belongs to all of us and so if the coach thinks you’re needed at a particular point in time and calls you, why not.

“I am ever ready to return to the Black Stars. It’s the pride and joy of any player to play for the national team.

“I am concentrating on my club duties at Santos but if the opportunity presents itself to return, I will grab it."

Paintsil will have to compete with the likes of Daniel Opare, Samuel Inkoom and Harrison Afful for a place in the Black Stars as all of the players have shown good form in the national team in recent times.

The ex-Hapoel Tel Aviv defender is the second most capped Ghanaian player after veteran goalkeeper Richard Kingson after playing 88 times for the West Africans.
