Ghana international youth defender Daniel Pappoe will return to the Stamford Bridge in January, Chelsea have announced.

The West London side have farmed out the 19-year-old central-defender to English lower-tier side Colchester United to gain regular first team action.

Pappoe captained Chelsea's U21 side last season and helped them to reach the semi-finals of the NextGen Series in Italy.

He was hoping to gatecrash Jose Mourinho's first team squad but the competitiveness of the Portuguese's defence ruled him for a place in the pre-season squad.

Pappoe's powerful presence in defence is expected to earn him regular action at Colchester and build his confidence before he returns to Chelsea six months later.

"I am happy to be joining @ColU_Official on loan. Looking forward to helping the U's achieve their aims. Thanks to all 4 making it possible," he tweeted.

When he returns in January, he might be lucky to experience some first team experience at Chelsea with Jose Mourinho's affection for African players.
