Ghana coach calls for total support for Gyan

Posted On Friday, 13th July 2012

Asamoah Gyan has returned to the Black Stars

By Patrick Akoto

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah is delighted with the return of Asamoah Gyan to the national team but wants fans to measure their criticism of players.

The 26-year-old confirmed his return to the Black Stars after a five-month self-induced break from the national team.

The UAE-based Al Ain attacker retired from the team in February saying he was frustrated over the verbal abuse he received after playing at the 2012 African Cup of Nations.

But the former Sunderland man says he is now psychologically fit and ready for selection ahead of the country’s  impending international assignments.

“ He (Gyan) is a good player and surely happy that he has now finally rescinded his decision,” Appiah said

‘It was unfortunate he went out of the team due to the way he treated by some fans. I believe we should all put it behind us as a country and forge ahead,”

“We cannot continue to single out players for criticisms if things do go our way. We have to learn as a people to stop that.

“Now that he is back, we need to support him because at the end of the day, he is going to kill himself for the nation.”

Gyan’s return will boost the country chances ahead of the 2013 African Cup of Nations qualifier against lowly-ranked Malawi in September and October and more crucially the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
