Ghana coach Akwasi Appiah risks dismissal in Nations Cup failure

By Ameenu Shardow

Akwasi Appiah will be fired in the event it is conclusively proven he was the cause of Ghana’s failure to win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

This means that the Black Stars boss will not be sacked just because the country failed to win the title but it must be proven that he was the cause of the failure.

The Black Stars are looking to end a 31-year wait for an African crown by the time the tournament kicks off on January 19 in South Africa.

Ghana has failed to get close to Nations Cup success since reaching the finals in 1992 and in 2010.

The team failed to shine at the last tournament in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea with a fourth place finish – leading to the dismissal of Serbian coach Goran Stevanovic.

Now the Ghana FA says it has tasked coach Appiah to deliver victory in South Africa of which failure to do so attributed to him will lead to his ultimate sacking.

“The coach and the GFA are aware of the targets. In the contract, the target for the coach is to win this Nations Cup,” Ghana FA boss Kwasi Nyantakyi told said at a media briefing on Thursday.

“However let me quickly point out or add that the fact that you do not win a cup is not an enough basis or alone conclusively that the coach has not done well and so he has to be sacked.

“In every business situation, you do what you call a swot analysis. There are even external factors that can influence performance and you have to do all these.

“But if after doing that, the poor performance points irresistibly to one and only one direction that it is the man (coach) who did not do his work, I think it will be obvious to all.”

Ghana is drawn in Group B which will be based in Port Elizabeth alongside Mali, Niger and Congo DR.

The Black Stars will open their campaign on January 20 against the Congolese at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

  5. BX, NYC says:

Hmmm… i like this becuase, if the coach fails to call the right players to play for the nation and consequently gets eliminated from the tournament, then he’s gone.. Bring on someone to qualify Ghana to the WC. My suggestion is Sellas Tettey

    • Robeen says:

This is good, I think the coach will now call the right players to save his job. Ghana is blessed with quality and talented players yet he continue to call bench warmers. How can Zambia make mockery of Ghana? China? Liberia? Gosh !! Disgusting, just disgusting.
GHANA DESERVE BETTER, BEST COACHES IN THE WORLD APPLIED TO COACH GHANA BUT……..

      • Kay says:

Thank you Robeen. Over hundred coaches including former Brazil national coach yet GFA decided to give it to a rookie, now see the results?.
Even, even Zambia laughing at Ghana? Anyway we are all watching and waiting.

  6. Mwansa says:

Give this prayer to your coach:

“god please save my job, do all thou canth so that my path may be right and i dont meet these Zambians or Nigerians whose strength and wisdom surpass my own and my team and will surely conquer me and send me they parking to my home and lose my job. amen”

    He will need it.

  7. agyei says:

Kwasi Appiah just has to pick the right players —- Wakaso, Abeyie, Akwasi Asare, Adomah, Jordan Ayew, Emmanuel Frimpong, Afriyie Acquah, etc…and blend them with the other ones….and thats it! No favors!

Until he does that…..fireworks….its over! Stop calling players like Lee Addy, etc…!

  8. Chu says:

And who told sade and mwansa nigeria and zambia would get to the semis with ivory coast and tunisia ready for them

  9. Chu says:

We know luck might just not be found when zambia meets CIV. And we should know nigeria had hardly beaten tunisia

  10. Kotoko says:

Appiah shame these idiots and do what they hv failed to do in the past 32years with there colonial coaches!!!

  11. Fiifi, Berlin says:

Mr. Nyantekyi WHY OH WHY??? How can you make such a statement at this crucial time ahead of the preparations towards this important competition?? You have just put unnecessary pressure on the coach and in a way given the players “alibis” in case they don’t perform well – they would put every blame on the coach to cover up their own weaknesses and total failures! Remember the last AFCON and the “PLAVI/JUJU TALK”!! INSTEAD OF MOTIVATION, THREATS AND UNNECESSARY PRESSURE – MR. NYANTEKYI, IS THIS YOUR NEW MOTTO ? (PLAVI HAD A BETTER DEAL, BECAUSE HE FIRST SUGGESTED HIS OWN “SACKING” IF HE DOESN’T WIN THE AFCON)HOW HAVE THE TIMES CHANGED !

  12. Oluwo says:

I see a repeat of the ’94 AFCON final ‘BAPTISM OF FIRE ‘between Nigeria and Zambia….watch dis space!!!

  13. kwame antwi says:

just call a player like abeyie and you will be fine

  14. SNOW DEMON says:

IT IS NYANTAKYI RATHER THAT NEEDS A MILITARY SWAT ANALYSIS FOR DUBIOUS ACTIVITIES. LET STOP SACKING COACHES

  15. zambia is a shit hole! says:

Forkin bantus…always spying on gh..everything ghana wants zambia envy..AA wil do da job…let c how lucky zambia is in SA.

  16. cromantin says:

    @ PAPA:

That is exactly our problem. We revel in ridiculing other Africans for committing errors in a foreign language. But even here he did say “swot” and not “swat”. Is English his mother tongue? No. So why should he speak it perfectly? The English have been in contact with us for more than 500 years. Do they speak our languages? Tschewwww ….

  17. INKOOM says:

if we lose to Zambia again ,he will be for sure be fired
