Ghana coach Akwasi Appiah insists John Mensah still has a chance of making the Black Stars squad for the 2014 World Cup but only if he starts playing regular club football again.

The 31-year-old who is currently without a club has spoken of his desire to return to the Ghana squad for next year’s World Cup in Brazil.

Mensah has not played in any competitive match since leaving Stade Rennes at the end of last season.

The ex Olympique Lyon defender has had to battle a chronic back problem which he now says is completely healed.

But coach Akwasi Appiah has refused to rule out his former captain but says Mensah needs to start playing again to be considered.

“He is not ruled out yet and I am still monitoring him,” he told GTV’s Stage Africa show.

“If he is fit and playing actively then why not?”

Mensah will be hoping to secure a club with the secondary European transfer window on the horizon.

The former Sunderland loanee has played for Ghana in its previous two World Cup campaigns in 2006 and 2010 in Germany and South Africa respectively.
