Ghana coach Akwasi Appiah insists John Mensah still has a chance of making the Black Stars squad for the 2014 World Cup but only if he starts playing regular club football again.

The 31-year-old who is currently without a club has spoken of his desire to return to the Ghana squad for next year’s World Cup in Brazil.

Mensah has not played in any competitive match since leaving Stade Rennes at the end of last season.

The ex Olympique Lyon defender has had to battle a chronic back problem which he now says is completely healed.

But coach Akwasi Appiah has refused to rule out his former captain but says Mensah needs to start playing again to be considered.

“He is not ruled out yet and I am still monitoring him,” he told GTV’s Stage Africa show.

“If he is fit and playing actively then why not?”

Mensah will be hoping to secure a club with the secondary European transfer window on the horizon.

The former Sunderland loanee has played for Ghana in its previous two World Cup campaigns in 2006 and 2010 in Germany and South Africa respectively.

Why not? If he starts playing competitively again, then he deserve a chance

Bullocks!!!! is this the case with Dauda???????????? please AA, dont think us unintelligent. that statement is an insult to kwaresay.

  3. OGYA says:

Why don’t the coach say the same to Fatau Dauda. This is total baloney.

Adam Kwarasey should have been Ghana’s no1 goalkeeper all along. He has been playing regularly in his club and been one of the best in that league. Adam Kwarasey doesn’t even have to play for Ghana, he sacrifices his time to be part of the Ghana Black Stars through thick and thin ends up to be a back up to a bench warming Fatau Dauda? This can only happen in Akwesi Appiahs’s Black Stars.

In the present Black Stars NEPOTISM RULES.

  4. JOE says:

I have always said diz dat, Olele n John Mensah will go to de world even if tornado wish he will be added to de team.

  5. peewee says:

Remember folks, John’s a quality player and very strong too. If he finds a club, even if locally and plays regularly he should be considered, during our match with Uruguay in south Africa,J0hn saved us in the early stages,he blocked and prevented Suarez and other attackers from scoring otherwise we would have been downed by 3 goals before the halve,so we need an experience defender like John in the word cup to clean up the mess of other defenders,

  6. Assemblyman says:

Hmm..Akwasi Appiah guy..smh..I think both negative and positive comments made by all of you guys are correct.I rest my case I guess.Because you have said it all.May God save Ghana. This will be my prayers for now.

  7. Blakroze GH says:

Yes Inkoom plays ACTIVE football that’s why he is being called always…..ACCORDING TO AKWASI APPIAH!!!! Men this man is NOT a man of his words……I’m beginning to think that he is a liar…he should remove all doubts from our minds by removing all INACTIVE PLAYERS like he always tells us…

  8. JNR says:

My question is WHY???? Why even consider him at all when he hasn’t even played ANY football at all since the middle of LAST SEASON? It doesn’t make sense to consider him at all to play, unless there is something going on behind the scenes just to include him on the plane to Brazil…. Well, when it comes to the GFA and Akwasi Appiah, there is ALWAYS something going on behind the scenes, SMH!

    • Quincy among EA Sports 5star skill players says:

well he said he’s been monitoring him. we all know he’s not been playing football so my be Agya Appiah has been monitoring him from Mensah’s garden. Someone made an earlier comment about Kwarasey, I think Kwarasey has every right to be number 1 in Ghana. With John Mensah’s issues I thin openions would be divided bcos everyone is really scared about our leaking defence. I think the coach must keep faith in John Boye, Jonathan Mensah, Akaminko and hpefull Vorsah would bounce back miraculously before the world cup. These South African and TP Mazembe defenders he’s been calling are shit and would disgrace us at World cup

  9. Olonka says:

This is welcome news cos half fit John Mensah is better than the rest of the defenders and let me pass this across that we can’t send this shaky defence to the WC so we should include him if he starts playing actively.

  10. Dr. Zomito says:

I think he has started taking bribe from this old man because local coaches are all the same. I will not even be surprised if Oti Akenten’s boy Paintsil is also in the squad.

  11. gb says:

john Mensah should play in the ghana local league to get chance the show case skills in Brazil

  12. Idiami says:

    Is appiah really a coach?apuuuuu

  13. top ranking says:

AA is not serious for real.kwarasey should be in post for ghana instead of dauda.kwarasey plays regularly in his club and also a captain.but that useless coach called AA will pick a non performing player like dauda over kwarasey.no team formation, just like fr3 fr3 korbor.if AA does not perform well in the mundial,he should be fired.its a waste of resources and time to have a coach who cant even have the forsight to pick the right players

  14. Richard says:

Yes! Ghana played exceptionally well against Egypt in the first leg of the qualifier. But what you guys should realise is that Gomaa also cost the Eqyptian team a lot of grieve all cuz he is old and can’t keep up with pacey strikers. we can’t have same scenario play against us in the world cup. Mensah is now old we don’t need a player like that in the black stars now. especially having been inactive for so long.

  15. African Consciousness says:

If he cannot find a European Club just come back home and play in the GLO premier league so Ghana fans can evaluate his fitness and competence to help the Black Stars?

There are a lot of very fine players that helped the Black Stars make it to the World Cup it will be a slap in the face to push them all aside to bring back the likes of John Mensah, Stephen Appiah, John Paintsil Richard Kingson etc.
