Asamoah Gyan insists he wont take penalties for the Black Stars
Asamoah Gyan won’t take a penalty in regular play for Ghana at the African Cup of Nations after his mother asked him not to just two weeks before she died.
The Ghana captain said he would take his late mother’s advice into the tournament in South Africa after costly recent misses for his team that he conceded on Wednesday had left him ”psychologically down” and forced him to take a break from international football.
Gyan’s mother died in November after a car accident in Ghana.
”I lost my mum recently and the one thing she said two weeks before she died, she emphasized, was these penalty kicks,” Gyan said on Ghana’s arrival for the African Cup.
”I have to respect her decision for me not taking penalties for the team.”
Gyan’s crucial misses included in the dying minutes of extra time in the World Cup quarterfinals against Uruguay in South Africa in 2010 that denied the Black Stars history as the first African team to make the semifinals.
He also missed in the semifinals of last year’s African Cup and Ghana went on to lose to eventual champion Zambia.
Gyan was philosophical after a pocket of chanting Ghana supporters welcomed him and his team to South Africa, and offered extra cheers for the captain.
”Things happen in life. Many players miss penalties,” Gyan said.
But the striker also said he was affected by his failures from penalties and they forced him to take a break from internationals following the last African Cup.
”That is why I took time off. Because I was psychologically down,” he said. ‘
‘I had to step back to psych myself and then come back to the team.”
Gyan leads another Ghana team expected to challenge strongly for the title.
The team wants so badly to end a 30-year period of failure at the championship.
NO MORE PENALTY KICKS FOR GYAN!
NO MORE SPOT KICKS FOR THIS GYAN EXCEPT IN A SHOOTOUT SITUATION, YOU KNOW AFTER EXTRA TIME ETC. LET SOMED=BODY ELSE TAKE IT, NOT GYAN.
GYAN SHOULD ONLY BE ALLOWED TO KICK PENALTIES AFTER 90MINUTES PLUS SUDDEN DEATH, NOT DURING THE COURSE OF PLAY. JESUS CHRIST, LOOK AT HIS AWFUL
RECORD… In WC 2006 against Czech, he missed a penalty. In 2010, he missed a penalty. In a friEndly against S. Korea before AFCON 2012, he
missed and the recent one against Zambia. so he shd take a break on penalty kicks.
THE GUY IS CRYING FOR HELP, AND WE KEEP ALLOWING HIM TO HANG HIMSELF…LOL
EVEN IF HE GETS FOULED A MILLION TIMES IN THE BOX, DONT ALLOW HIM TO TAKE THE PENALTY KICK…
GFA U ARE FOOLS! THIS KURASINI GYAN THROWS SOME PAPER MONEY, MAN MADE PAPER MONEY AT YOU N U GIVE HIM THE ARMBAND. U THINK U CAN BUY ROYALTY?
GYAN WILL CONTINUE TO SUCK AS A PLAYER N GH CAPTAIN. U WILL SEE. I MEAN HOW CAN U ALLOW A SAUDI PLAYER TO CAPTAIN GH? IT SHOULDNT BE ABOUT HOW
LONG U HAVE PLAYED FOR GH OR SENIORITY BUT UR DEDICATION TO THE GBSTARS. IF THAT WAS THE CASE THEN ROYALS WILL ALL BE OLD PPL. OR PRESIDENTS
WILL ALL BE OLD PPL, BUT IS DAT THE CASE?…NO!
Gyan do not worry I am one of the fans calling for your head after the World Cup and especially after AFCON 2012 I ripped you to shreds. I applaud your courage in coming back. A healthy Gyan is a dangerous Gyan. Gyan the Captain is an invincible Gyan. God will bless you and your mother will smile on you. You will score so many goals in this tournament that you will not even need PK’s to win the Golden Boot.
Just be ready when Christian Atsu unleashes you with his through balls. I believe in you and I know your mother believes you can be the goal king despite not taking the PK’s. You will get crosses from your #10 Adomah. You will get balls from K Asamoah, you will get balls from Solo Asante when he weaves through the opponents defence and lays you a pass. I know you will get some balls from the middle from Agyeman Badu, and lest I forget Wakaso can drop a pass on the head of a pin, he will feed you, so just be ready my brother the goals will flow like water. With your incredible speed and intelligence you will convert so take heart all is well, no worries.
Gyan you are an inspiration and a role model for what is beautiful about the Ghanaian and African spirit. As the Captain I want to see you lift that golden trophy for all your sacrifices and challenges you have endured as a Black Star.
Regardless of the outcome Ghanaians will support the 2013 AFCON Black Stars and their coaching and technical team.
