Ghana begins inquest on 2013 AFCON failure

Ghana players mourn AFCON failure

By Ameenu Shardow

The Ghana FA’s Executive Committee is awaiting detailed reports on why the Black Stars failed to win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

The report presentation expected by Friday from the technical and management teams will kick start a rigorous inquest on Ghana’s failed bid in South Africa.

The Black Stars broke many Ghanaian hearts at the Nations Cup after finishing a disappointing fourth.

The team’s ambition of ending a 31-year trophy drought came crashing at the semi-final stage with a penalty shootout defeat to Burkina Faso.

The Black Stars’ woes were further compounded with a stinging 3-1 defeat to Mali in the third-place playoff – ensuring the team finished the three-week competition with just a handshake.

Ghana’s disappointing finish has now sparked several debates as to the way forward for the Black Stars.

Opinions are sharply divided on whether or not to retain the services of coach Akwasi Appiah.

Others also believe big name players such as Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari and John Mensah should return to the side while the unimpressive ones during the tournament be shown the exit.

The Ghana FA’s powerful 22-man Executive Committee will however delve into these critical issues after it is presented with the respective reports on Friday.

It is only after a careful study and analysis of the reports that definite decisions will be made on the salient issues that have emerged.

Essien, John Mensah and Muntari’s inclusion will not solve the problem since they have passed their prime. The problem is Coaching, Management and selecting the right players (not the likes of Gyan ad Derek Asamoah.)We have a long way to go GFA so put on your thinking cup

  2. Bud says:

    INQUEST????

    hahhahahhahahhahahahha

    TWO THINGS

    1)
They shouldd first try and solve the issue of these idiotic haircuts…..a grown man like vorsah with blond hair in 2013 or a grown man like paintsil with a mowhawk…..
When they put on the red/gold/green, theye are representing 26 million people…..they cant even make us look good let alone win something!!!

    2)
How can you win something with a corrupted body like the GFMA (Ghana Football Maffia Association)
Gyan should have been axed a long time ago.

    -STRIKERS:
*Why was Waris(leading striker Sweden) not selected and did Clottey make the list. Is the swedisch league not stronger than the Tunisian league? This Clottey guy is rubbish…never scores anything
*Why did Sammy Afum not receive a call up, he has been performing very good and moved to europe. Good fast striker.
*Where is Owusu Abeyei, the best winger we have , 100 times better than Atsu.
These are trouble makers in front of the goal but we took an expired selfish asamoah gyan and this clottey guy.

    -DEFENDERS
*Dont tell me there is no local left back better, stronger, bigger than this Harrisson Afful guy. Would have better played Seth Owusu from hearts. At least he is big/long and strong and fast. A bit like Taiwoo. Or at least Razak Nuhu, young, fast, and well football educated at Man City
*Vorsah….the guy with his kwasia haircut is OVER!!!!! Jonathan Mensah, young, good, strong and motivated.
    * Are you telling me that in the WHOLE OF GHANA, from west to east, from south to north, there is no one in the country that can play right back for oluman paintsil???

    -Midfield
    *Adomah…Shaking my Head
    *Asante…Shaking my Head

Look at Naija….They changed everything….they just choose the best players!!!!!

  3. BX, NYC says:

what’s the purpose to await a report. Weren’t the technical team there to see for themselves???? The whole world saw what an incompetent coach Ghana has.. Its simply black and white..Sack the coach and bring on the right players, instruct them with excellent technicalities and formation and we’ll be fine… Worst Black Stars performance EVER at the recent AFCON.. Horrible.. the whole world who have come to develop love for Ghana football is disappointed.. not just Ghanaians alone..

  4. yopoo says:

GFA should stop fooling us which report ar they waiting for? Do they want to tell us they don’t know what cause us the cup? Anyway let me remind them is their coach and his bad selections.they said they task kwesi appiah to win the cup so if he has failed to do so then he be fired. It took Keshi only 3months to build the Nigerian team that won the afcon so if you are a good you can work things out but if you are not a good coach even if they give you ten years to build you will fail.

  5. mojahadine says:

Nonesense what report is this idiotic GFA expecting to recieve. The problems Ghana had were all too glaring and you do not need a report to find out.

Ghanas problem was three fold, BAD COACHING by Akwesi Appiah, ASAMOAH GYAN and DEREK BOATENG. If these three are relieved of their Black Stars duties the fortunes of our beloved team will quadruple. Other than that just kiss the world cup good bye with any AFCON championships.

    • Ghanaman says:

Idiot!!! You are either a foreigner or a devil that needs to die!

      • mojahadine says:

Be civilized Ghanaman, common sense is what you need. Do not engage in threats. Make your point without insults. People who are not intelligent and smart always use insults and threats to make a point because they are the easiest words to say or write.

You just exposed the level of your intelligence. Come up with intelligent points or get the hell out of this forum.

  6. mojahadine says:

Ghana Black Stars will improve tremendously if these two coaches are brought on board SILLAS TETTEH and KUUKU DADZIE. They are no pushovers and no nonsense coaches and probably that will be the reason why the GFA mafia will not give them the chance.

As we have all seen that the recent Black Star coaches are all UNCLE TOM’S

    • Ghanaman says:

Just shut up!! Sellas has to rebuild his reputation after flopping at Rwanda!!

      • mojahadine says:

Once again, Ghanaman, the difference between Ghana and Rwanda is, Ghana has a pool of players to choose from. Rwanda does not have that luxury. Sillas got himself into a trap. He did not know Rwanda that well enough to get the right players. Perhaps he should not have taken that job.

With Ghana he coached and won a world cup championship with a lot of these present day Black Star players at the under 20 level so he knows how to get the best out of them. Moreover, Sillas Tetteh is the only African coach that has ever won a world cup championship for under 20 team. Does that fact tweak your gumtions?

I hope you take this advise “Do not write with your mouth but with your mind”

      • PITO says:

Ghanaman, for your infomation DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY AFRICAN TEAMS KESHI COACHED AND FLOPPED?

        • PITO says:

I take it A fool like you, Ghanaman, will take that to mean A.A has flopped so he should be allowed to continue.RATHER WHAT THIS MEANS IS, the COUNTRY you coach is a determining factor.Imagine if in the afcon first game A.A was the DRC coach and le roy was the Ghana Coach, you think who would have won? Infact a true Coach will not have selected certain players into the team and left certain players out in the first place. Not to mention, selecting untested AWAL from PSL and starting him in midfield. many many amateur errors, give A.A upas an apprentice coach but i dont want my speech to be too long.

  7. Kwame Adu-Gyamfi says:

I know we did not meet expectations this tournament. But how can Ghanaians say this our worst tournament ever. I think we have short memories. 2008 was the first time since 1996 that Ghana was in the top four. 2004 Ghana didn’t even make to the tournament. There have been tournaments were Ghana didn’t even make it out of the group. For a team that has recently just been put together and with a such a poor technical team, they actually did well. If this group stays and grows together, also if the technical team also begins to grow themeselves this team will be dangerous.

    • Kofi says:

Kwame Adu-Gyamfi, did you seriously watch this AFCON? And you were happy with our performance?

What we are saying is that Ghana has always been noted for a certain brand of soccer. In the past, we would play eye-pleasing soccer with no results, so we brought in the foreign coaches who changed our play. We played effective soccer but not necessarily beautiful to watch.

Under these foreign coaches Akwasi Appiah was assistant coach. What Ghanaians were expecting was that he would have picked up on how to play effectively and combined it with our indeginous beautiful play.

So at this AFCON, we were expecting to see a very tactical play combined with some flair. However, what we witnessed was a team lacking either flair or tactical discipline. At times i was left wondering what our game plan was cos the players seemed to be playing without purpose.

That is why a team like Cape Verde even after losing to us would feel they were just unlucky. Coupled with very dubious referees’ decisions that favored us all the time.

On most blogs, you find that people just ridicule Ghana. The fear that the name Black Stars used to put in our opponents is no longer there and we are gradually losing our place among the best (if we haven’t lost it already).

  8. cool says:

Ghanaman or what your name is,please give us some concrete ideas and stop the insults.I think you uneducated scum bag sitting in some wretched village in Africa with a stolen Laptop making stupid comments. Please give us some ideas on how to make the Black Stars better. Please use your brains and don’t waste.

  9. mower says:

Am sick and tired of all this crazy thing called report. What happen to the previous report? What was the report about and what correction measures was taken first?let start from there but i can tell you over and over again,it is only a fool who does the same thing over time and expecting a different result.Yes the coach has it own inadequacies and we we have sacked previous coaches, what happens to the administrators this time around.Everything rise and fall of leadership.

  10. Kwame says:

Ghanaman, it seems you have no intelligent arguments to add to this discourse, or any for that matter. You only seem capable of malicious and ignorant insults. Are you really Ghanaian? If so, try to represent Ghana with a little more class if you must use Ghana as part of your username. Do we not belong to a free society where people are entitled to challenge the actions of governing heirachies? The way you follow so blindly, you would have made a great Nazi soldier. Please stop bringing shame upon our great tradition of education, tolerance and peace. There is a time and a place for all honest discussion.

  11. PITO says:

Football Management In This Current Age Has No Room For Trial And Error. We Cannot Give A Coach Experience With Our Top Job. If A.A Remains He Will Bring Us More Dissapointment Because He Is Still A Student and still In A Learning Process. Trust Me With Appiah in charge,Herve Renard Will Come To Ghana And Give Us Uppercut We will be Surprised. If We Want To Beat Sudan And Zambia, Bring In A New Coach With new Brains And Inspiration. For the records, Akwasi Appiah Lost As Assistant Coach To Zambia And Lost As Headcoach Again To Zambia. He Drew a nil all draw As Headcoach Against Sudan In Kumasi And He Will Be Lucky To Draw Again When We Play Sudan Next Month. It Is Written On The Wall. Look At The Case Of Chelsea And Di Matteo. Football Management Is Not A Joke. Blackstars Under Apprentice A.A Is Lost For Inspiration. GFA if you sit on your ass and When all these things happen, WE WILL COME FOR YOU.

  12. Tanko says:

Why would any reasonable mind think about keeping AA to oversee the affairs of the BLACK STARS . The die is cast! And AA must take to the exit door. May Jordan Anagbla’s soul rest in peace! Amen! He would have been the only one with balls to say it like it is. All the rest, Nyantakyi’s included are rotten and needs serious investigation. Della’s Tetteh is the way forward…

  13. Yankeeman says:

This bunch of criminals at the Gfa want to take Ghanaians for granted, what report?to who?the president or the minister or to the chief criminal Nyantakye who is only interested in syphoning money from govt to run his club.Nobody is interested in their nonsense report all we care is for them to resign they are not the only people who can run the Gfa.Nyantakye and his Akwesi Appiah must resign becos they have fail,Akwesi didnt learn anything after serving as assistant coach becos he doesnt deserve that position but he was planted by criminal politicians for their selfish gains.

  14. tanco tee says:

Personally, Appiah is good 4 bs job but in my own observation d man has two major problems..1 he doesn’t have d charisma to inspire his boys to go 4 kill or to bring out d best in his boys.,2 he has a selection problem. By now he should have learnt his lesson am a nigerian but l will beg my ghanians friends to give him more time..stephen keshi can’t make out of d group in his first two nations cup appearances with togo nd mali respectively now see where he is today

  15. trying, trying and trying says:

what do you need an inquest for?
when everybody was going with a tried and tested coach, you are going to try your coach. what do you need an inquest for? ok you tried him, he failed but a tyrant, a typical african style dictator would still keep him because he is autonomous, untouchable, has got all the power.
you keep trying him and keep getting trying results and you better be happy with that dudes.

  16. Awal says:

We only got a month before we play Sudan and for this reason it would be catastrophic to start looking for a new coach in the W/Cup campaign ,lets just rally behind the team and hope for the best uin the coming matches

  19. Joe Atiso says:

I wish the nameless Trokosi/NDC tribalists on this forum will be Bold and Sensible enough to accord Akwasi Appiah and kwasi Nyantakyi the respect they deserve. Most of you idiots would have found a way out to spew your Nonsense and tribal venom even if the Black Stars had won the tournament due to your Deep-Seated Hatred for Akans/Asantes.What Kwasi Nyantakyi’s led GFA has done for Ghana football is unprecedented and almost comparable to the Great Ohene Gyan’s administration. If you idiots and your fools in government (NDC) would orchestrate the changing of Ohene Gyan Sports stadium name, it doesn’t surprise me that you’re ready to Hang or crucify Akwasi Appiah and Kwasi Nyantakyi. You should all Back off and leave the wise and chosen few to salvage Ghana’s football. What a shame! Power has indeed gone to DOGS.

  20. Nigerian loudmouth says:

I AM NOT A GHANAIAN BUT I AM MARRIED TO A GHANA AND DESPITE THE FACT THAT I AM A NIGERIAN , I DO NOT LIKE THE PERFORMANCE OF THE BLACK STARS IN THE AFCON 2013
I SUGGEST THAT GFA SHOULD STOP RELYING ON BIG NAMES OR FOREIGN BASED PROFFESIONALS AND TAKE A CLUE FROM KESHIA BY LOOKING INWARD AND GIVE SOME HOT HOME BASED PLAYERS IN GHANA LEAGUE SOME CHANCE IN THE NATIONAL TEAM
LOOK AT OUR NATIONAL TEAM, WHEN THE LIKES OF MARTINS, OZASE ODEMIWINGIE, TAIYE TAIWO, OBINNA NSOFOR, ALL BECAME TOO PROUD WE HAD TO DROP THEM AND YOU AND I CAN SEE THE RESULT NOW
    LET GHANA FA FOLLOW SUIT

  21. kimco says:

@ joe atiso: you’re an idiot and very uncultured. Pls carry on with your buffonery, we do need a forum clown here.

  22. Djeniko says:

I am a nigerian. I think this is what ghana should do. 1. Keep AA as coach. He needs time. 3yrs at least. Keshi failed and failed but he got it right with time. He is now d hottest coach in d world today. 2. Weed out some old tired ones in d present squad eg gyan, pensile etc. 3. Invite young good players eg ayew brothers. 4. Invite some old good players eg essien, montari. 5. Look for local boys that can be sent overseas. 6. Build d team around mubarak and his likes. Ayew brothers would have paired well with him. 7. Send d coach for short term training with oversea cubs like arsenal, ac milan, r.madril etc. I repeat give this coach time. He needs it to rebuild and learn from mistakes.
