Ghana axe goalkeeper Fatau Dauda for Montenegro friendly
Fatau Dauda has been left out of the squad to play Montenegro

South Africa-based goalkeeper Fatau Dauda has been axed from Ghana's squad to play Montenegro in a World Cup warm-up next week.

The Orlando Pirates shot-stopper was left out of coach Kwesi Appiah's 21-man squad for the friendly game on 5 March.

It was not certain why the Ghana first-choice goalkeeper was left out of the squad to play the match but it could be the chance to offer someone the opportunity to be observed.

Local Black Stars goalkeeper Stephen Adams has been named to partner Adam Kwarasey for the match following his excellent showing at the Africa Nations Championship in South Africa in January for the Local Black Stars.

While it is clear that coach Kwesi Appiah is unable to call many players because it is only a friendly, some might conclude that the lack of first team action at club level might have contributed to the decision to axe Dauda.

Dauda has been confined to the role of a fringe player at his club Orlando Pirates and has struggled for form and confidence since his big money move from Ghanaian Premier League side AshantiGold to the South African league early last year.

South African goalkeeper Mewiya Senzo’s fine form in the league means Dauda has made only one competitive appearance in the South African league - an appearance that ended in defeat for Orlando Pirates in their 1-0 defeat to Polokwane City.

Despite his exclusion in the squad to face Montenegro Dauda remains among the best two bets of the Black Stars goalkeeping position at the World Cup.
