Ghana's striker Asamoah Gyan vies with Tunisia's Jamel Saihi (R) during the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN 2012) quarter-final football match between Tunisia and Ghana
Assistant Black Stars coach, Kwesi Appiah says Ghana always expected a tight game against Tunisia at 2012 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday.
The Black Stars scored an extra-time goal to edge out the north Africans 2-1 in the quarter-final clash at the Stade de Francville to book a semi-final date with Zambia on Wednesday.
“We all know Tunisia have got a very good team. We had to plan a real tactical game to make sure that we could hold them and at the same time rely on counter attacks to break their defence,” the assistant Black Stars coach, Kwesi Appiah said.
First half goals from John Mensah and Khalifa Sabeur kept the scores at 1-1 in normal time but Ghana eliminated the Carthage Eagles courtesy an extra-time winner through Andre Ayew in the 100th minute.
“We knew very well that it wasn’t going to be an easy a game. So we were not surprised when it went extra-time.
“But the most important thing was making sure that we got to the next stage,” Appiah added.
Ghana will play Zambia in Bata, Equatorial Guinea in the last four.
But clearly you guys did not need to defend an early one goal lead. That was a terrible mistake, how can you defend a one go lead for more than 80 minutes. We should have continue with the attacking play until we secure two or three goals.
Also the coach should stop playing Milo’s game, where only Asamoah Gyan is deployed in attack. All the teams now know him, so they ensure that two defenders are allocated to monitor him…. he is not effective any more, b’cos all defenders have their eyes on him.
HEY GORAN, GHANA NEEDS TWO STRIKERS ON THE PITCH IN OUR NEXT GAME. WE NEED TO APPLY CONSTANT PRESSURE TO OUR OPPONENTS DEFENCE. THIS CAREFUL FOOTBALL WE ARE PLAYING ONLY ENDS UP BOOSTING OUR OPPONENTS CONFIDENCE INTO THE GAME. LISTEN TO ME AND STOP IT!
Our boys mst learn how to run in d game, diz old style passing n standing game is no more every opposition can match u play that game. They mst play tactical modern football (passing n movement). They must also be strong and hold the ball.
I agree with Africanus. The commentators continued to analyze how the Black Stars, for the better part, play a defensive game. They need to be on the attack AS WELL. Also, Gyan shouldn’t have to carry the load of scoring alone. Ayew has proved to be a precise striker, and his corners are all about that precision. I’m proud of the Black Stars, though, for their win against Tunisia. Despite the many unchecked fouls against them, they still managed to do what they do best: WIN. Something must be said about Kwarasey who prevented two balls going in at crucial moments. He really came alive in the extra time!
