GFA hails departing Black Stars coach Appiah for 'diligent' work for Ghana
Kwesi Appiah, left, has left his post as Ghana coach having been appointed in April 2012.

Ghana FA has expressed its gratitude former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah for his diligence in his service to the country with the federation wishing him the best for the future.

The GFA confirmed the news in an official statement on Friday after Appiah's departure had already been rumoured since last night.

Ghana parted company with coach Appiah on Friday 48 hours after a dramatic win away to neighbours Togo resurrected their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

However, they he failed to replicate their impressive showing at the 2010 World Cup finals after finishing bottom of their group with a solitary point.

They still had a remarkable game in Brazil, having held eventual world champions Germany to a 2-2 draw in one of the most thrilling matches of the tournament.

Despite the decision for Appiah to leave the post, the GFA says he was committed to the country.

"The GFA wishes to thank Mr Appiah for his diligent service to the country as the coach of the Black Stars for the past two years," the statement from the GFA read on Friday.

"We wish him every success for the future."

Appiah leaves a few days after helping Ghana claim a 3-2 victory over Togo in an exciting African Cup of Nations qualifier.

The Black Stars had opened their qualifying campaign with a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Uganda.

The 54-year-old took over at the team in April 2012 and became the first African to steer Ghana to a World Cup place after they reached the 2014 Brazil finals.
