Ghana coach Akwasi Appiah says debutant Emmanuel Frimpong needs more work despite being impressed with his integration in the Black Stars team.

The Arsenal player on loan at Fulham has joined up with the Ghana national for the first time since securing his nationality switch late last year.

Frimpong shook off a groin injury to complete the team’s first training session on Tuesday ahead of the 2014 World Cup qualifier against Sudan.

And coach Appiah says he likes what he has seen so far of the 21-year-old but admitted some work need to be done to build the midfielder’s fitness level.

“He is doing well so far, just that I still need to work on him a little bit,” he told MTNFootball.com.

“He’s mixed up with the boys so quickly, he speaks the language and that is the good part of it.

“Once you can speak the language you mix up with the boys so easily and he feels so comfortable.”

  1. Adebayo says:

What language is coach Appiah referring to as ‘the language’? The national team has its own language apart from the official language of the nation? This could hinder the integration of newcomers. Wake up Appiah!

    • Kwaku Tee says:

What the coach meant was Frimpong speaks Twi,and for him being able to speak one of the local languages means integration into the team would be easier. This could be one of the problems of the Ayews,we’re all aware that Jordan Ayew for example speaks only French. That could be the reason why may be he can’t mingle with his colleagues,he’s now trying to polish his English. He needs help from the Black Stars management to integrate into the team otherwise the issue of lack of trust will persist.

  2. kofi kyei says:

coach pls come again, did u mean the twi language? so do u want to tell us dat if one cant speak twi he willnt feel confortable, why do the other players dnt speak english or is twi the official language one shd speak at the team,

    • Musah sulaiman says:

that’s good question, answer him Kwaku Tee, some people in Ghana thinks that Twi is the official Language of Ghana while English is the official language of Ghana, well i don’t blame them because they were ignorance.

    • Nii Kwatei says:

True that! What about Prince, didn’t he excel at the Black Stars without speaking one word of Twi? Being able or not being able to speak Twi should not matter at all when playing the BLack Stars.

  3. Chale' 1 says:

We have some idiots on this forum. Do you have to disect, analyse and critisize everything our coach says? Please stop acting like fools and apply some intelligence to your comments.

It is always easier to communicate with people in their native language and that is all that the coach is saying. Stop making assumptions and accusations.

  4. Joe says:

@adebayor-dis is de way i defined call up/campng to Nyaho Tamakloe-call up/campng is nt a only a process to select good playrs bt also a playrs workshops / seminars to acquaint both old nd new recruits to the traditions, culture, technicalitis nd the mntalitis of a particular playing body.hence, every plyr needs to settle into a new team.language is a key tool.even the bst coahes in the wrl hav language as a stregth- morinho speaks portugues, spanish, italy, french, english.Arsene Wenger speaks frnch, italy, german, rusia, english, spanish, japan.mst of wengrs recruits oftn speaks one or more of these languages. communicatn is a powerfl tool.ican tell u the bst in the history of ghanas nationality switch is frimpong cos he speaks the language, even frafra,as lng as he speaks somthng is alwys a plus.

  5. Lukersh says:

According to research the Akan languages is the most widely spoken and the easier to adopt or learn. I do not want to prempt your constructions, but you maybe widely and severally wrong in such a juxtaposition. Ask yourself: How many local movies are shown in the Akan language as compared to those you may tend to defend? Count any ten pp around you, at least 9 can speak and or understand akan. Even you. Pls lets know that, language is one of the ties that binds us together, and we need a strong Ghanaian team and not an English team. Cheers to our victory !!

  7. mojahadine says:

What the hell is this Akwesi Appiah talking about? this is how he gets himself into trouble. That statement about language seems like a jab to the Ayews. No need for that.

Secondly, Frimpong has been in the camp for only a day and he Akwesi Appiah has already diagnosed him not to be in shape. I am betting everyone of you, that is a code for “WILL BE ON THE BENCHJ”

  8. Joe says:

Joe is a Ga.i liv oversees.bt lik i said earlier on,language is a powerfl tool of both coaches nd playrs,it doesnt mattr what languag its,as long as u speak somthg, the bettr. dnt politicise this.

  9. kk says:

i heard frimpong speaking twi fluently on radio this morning. Can anyone mention any player in the current squad who doesn’t speak twi? What Coach Appiah is trying to say is although Frimpong has lived majority of his life outside the country, he speaks twi fluently and that makes it easier for him to mingle with the other players.

  10. jj says:

this is fucking pissig me off. what does he mean by the language. i am ewe and cant speak twi so i cant integrate into the team even though i lve in Ghana absolutely disgraceful.

    • menash says:

Continue fucking pissing off and you will swallow your pissing again. The truth is what he has said and all the players knows about that. On the field of play the language they use to communicate is twi mostly. In few instances that they speak english. No Ewe or Ga or manplusi.

  11. Whocares? says:

Tribalism. Is Twi the national language of Ghana?

    • menash says:

Yes it will soon be the national language. How many people can speak english compare to Twi. For the other dialect throw them off board because even the natives speak twi more than thier native languages.

  12. vs says:

the coach did not say if you can’t speak twi you can’t be integrated into the team all he is saying is that it makes it easier lets not turn this into an argument about tribes

  13. menash says:

Haters. Fire go burn you all. Twi is official language and easy to adapt. If you like it or not. If you are EWE and you cant speak Twi who hell is that. You better start learning because the Efo who do movies speak Twi you know? All Ghanaian music is in Twi. Movies in Twi even most programs on TV are in Twi. Have you asked yourself why????
They are the most infuencial people in Ghana. Stop hating bodies. Even here in USA every person you meet if he is from Ghana is learning Twi but might not be Akan hmmmm asem beba dabi. The language Appiah said is Twi but is true from all this I have told you. Ov

    • kwame in london says:

It’s ok my brother Mensah, some ppl in Ghana will prefer to speak white man language instead of choosing the most popular language on their own land because of hatred

  14. Thomas says:

Plz guys, we must put a stop 2 dis and let us all support de black star to victory.

  15. jj says:

did you hear what i said i said we all need to see each others language as equals

  16. jj says:

and i am just saying this superiority complex amongst us is not good this is why our african countries are so disjointed. I am an ewe why do i have to learn another language in my own coutry to feel comfortable. Would you like it if we were dominant like in togo and ou have to speak our language in your own national team. we need to find a solution to suit all ethnic group in Ghana i cant see anything wrong with what am saying
