Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari got his name on the score-sheet on the day he was handed the captaincy in a pre-season match against Manchester City though the English title-holders humiliated them 5-1 in a friendly.

The 29-year-old pulled a goal back for the Rossoneris three minutes before the break at the Heinz Field but the Etihad giants went ahead to score again as they showed the Italians an idea of their own standards.

Playing his first game since the start of the pre-season, Milan manager Fillipo Inzaghi handed the armband to the Ghana international who was sacked from the Ghana camp during the World Cup and he overly impressed though his team was unconvincing.

City were too slick and clinical for a poor Milan side who were left chasing shadows as they fell 4-0 behind with just 26 minutes played and the Italians have now lost their opening two ICC matches.

But before heading for the break, Muntari claimed a close range finish to hand Milan faint hopes but City went ahead to score another goal.

Muntari kept his head up to tap home a goal-mouth scramble in the 42nd minute.

Michael Essien was introduced mid-way through the second-half to replace Andrea Poli but he could not help alter the fate of the game for his side.

AC Milan boss Fillipo Inzaghi has given a strong indication of his preference for Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari by handing him the captain’s armband in their pre-season tournament against English giants Manchester City.

The 29-year-old scrolled onto the pitch at the Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, leading the Milan side as they go seeking for their first pre-season win since arriving in the USA.

After sitting out of the four previous games played, Muntari was named in the Milan squad for the first and Inzaghi, who took charge after the departure of Clarence Seedorf, named him as his captain for the game.

In a strong squad that excluded Mario Balotelli and Michael Essien, Muntari is expected to marshal the Rossoneri midfield. 7

Ghana star winger Frank Acheampong inspired Anderlecht to a 3-1 victory over newly-promoted Mouscron-Péruwelz on Sunday afternoon at the Stade Constant Vanden Stock in the Belgian top-flight league.

The 20-year-old raced Les Mauves et Blancs into the lead with a patent 16th minute goal but the visitors pecked the scoring through Anice Badri just after the hour mark.

However goals from Aleksandar Mitrovi (72nd) and Matías Ezequiel Suárez (80th) handed a decent victory to Besnik Hasi’s side on the opening day of the season.

Acheampong, a member of the Ghana U20 squad in 2013 and capped once by Ghana, scored thrice last season in 24 appearances but seems to have opened the season on a brilliant note after seeing full-time action and scoring on the opening day of the season. 1

Two brilliant well-rehearsed first-half strikes lifted Sellas Tetteh’s Black Satellites side to a decent 3-1 victory over Ghanaian second-tier side Mighty Jets in an action-packed friendly game at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Attacker Sam Tetteh registered the first goal of the afternoon for the Satellites with a 13th minute fine finish before King Faisal striker Sulley Mohammed cushioned the lead in the 22nd minute.

Nicholas Mensah halved the deficit for the Division One campaigners with an outstanding dispatch two minutes before the break.

Christopher Bonney, who was among the second batch of players, scored the third goal with a sensational long range effort.

This was a game that received minimum publicity but got attendance under an unexpected fashion with most Ghana Premier League clubs sending scouts to watch the side.

Hearts of Oak’s assistant trainer was spotted in the stands assessing the qualities of Bechem United playmaker Emmanuel Asante who is their target. Inter Allies scouts were also on attendance as well as Ghana FA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi.

Sellas Tetteh was made to field a side that excluded the nimble-footed Patrick Asmer who was away with B/A United in the Division One Play-offs.

In his place, Sellas Tetteh introduced New Edubiase United midfielder Asiedu Attobrah who was involved in the opening goal but was taken off four minutes before the break after proving jittery and picking a ‘silly’ booking in the 36th minute.

18-year-old Leicester City U20 regular Aaron Opoku-Fordjour who is on trials with the side was left on the bench. The gifted forward had bagged 18 goals in  20 outings for his Leicester.

In a conducive atmosphere at Osu, it was the Satellites who claimed the lead just 13 minutes into the game. Asiedu won the ball back and played a quick 1-2 with Sulley Mohammed who centred for Sam Tetteh to finish.

The Satellites continued to boss the midfield and opened gagged space and created chances. Jets forced the Satellites to employ experience and Sulley Mohammed got the second goal.

A cross into the box was deflected back into the path of Sulley Mohammed who thumped the ball non-drop into the roof.

No major attacking incidents were recorded until 3 minutes before the break.

Joe Adjei handballed in the box and penalty was awarded to Jets. Nicholas Mensah gathered confidence and volleyed past Michael Sai in the Satellites goal.

Sellas Tetteh made wholesome changes during the bring but still left Leicester starlet Opoku on the bench and the second got a goal with Kotoko’s Christopher Bonney scoring from a belter.

But nine minutes to the end, the English-based was given a bite of the cherry as he was introduced for the injured and he was put through for a finish but he effort quirked wide off target.

RTU won their opening play-off match against W.A United

Real Tamale United took a giant step towards returning to the Ghana Premier League with a hard fought 3-2 win over West African United in the Middle League Playoff game played at the Sekondi Essipong Stadium on Sunday.

The Northerners raced into an impressive 3-0 lead in the first half through Wisdom Kelly, Kwabena Emmanuel and Awal Masawudu.

The win looked inevitable at halftime with West African United struggling to contain their hosts.

They however returned the more determined side in the second half – taking full advantage of a complacent RTU to score two goals and mount a late scare for the Tamale supporters.

RTU however held on despite a late surge from the visitors to take all three points in their opening playoff match. 1

A double second-half strike from Samuel Norgbey and Charles Oppong handed Brong Ahafo United an all-important 2-0 victory over regional rivals Berekum Arsenal in the Zone 1B Play-Offs on Sunday afternoon at the Robert Mensah Stadium.

A Norgbey 77th minute penalty gave B/A United the lead before Oppong cushioned the lead for the Sunyani-based side in the 83rd and send them top of the section.

The Robert Mensah Stadium offered a perfect platform for United and Arsenal to resume their regional rivalry away from home but the maximum points available for grasp soared their impetus.

United, who have the former Ghana international defender – Frimpong Manso, issuing instructions from the dug-out showed a lot of discipline and brilliance with Ghana U20 attacking midfielder Patrick Asmer and Gideon Awuni dazzling in the middle.

But their over-aggression in midfield fetched them the first booking of the match. Anokye Badu went into a flying tackle on Arsenal’s Osei and Daniel Laryea – the center referee rushed over to prevent a possible confrontation before flashing a card to the young defensive midfielder.

Arsenal occasionally came into the game with  Emmanuel Osei coming close on three occasions within the opening quarter of an hour. First first attempt came from a sole move which saw him traverse the United back-line but his innocuous hit was coolly collected by Osei Collins.

United nearly claimed the lead five minutes before the break. The slippery Patrick Asmer created space for himself in the middle before blitzing a darting drive which was blocked off the line.

After break, both sides tried to impose themselves on the game but none of them could take the lead until the 77th minute when United won a penalty. Fred Paintsil skirted in the Arsenal area, successfully beat his markers but was fouled inside the box.

Referee Laryea pointed to the spot. In a bid to ease the mounting tension his side, Frimpong Manso infected a change and when things settled, Norgbey Samuel stepped up and fired home for the opener.

Johnson Kyere fed a ball to Charles Oppong and he stormed off to slam the ball past the Arsenal keeper for the second goal. 0
Ghana midfielder Andre Ayew offered to AC Milan – report Sun, 27 Jul 2014 16:51:52 +0000 Ghana utility play-maker Andre Ayew may end up signing for AC Milan after being offered to the Italian Serie A giants on Sunday.

Andre Ayew has been linked with many clubs

Ghana utility play-maker Andre Ayew may end up signing for AC Milan after being offered to the Italian Serie A giants on Sunday.

According to the Italian sports newspaper Corriere dello Sport was offered to the club on Sunday as he is seeking a move away from French side Marseille.

The lack of title ambition by Marseille is said to have sparked the talented player’s desire to leave the club who are keen on keeping him.

Seeking reinforcements on the wings, the Rossoneri could be tempted by player profile of the 24-year-old, whose contract with Marseille expires in 2015.

AC Milan must fend off competition with Serie A campaigners Napoli who are said to have offered 10 million euros for the winger.

If the Rossoneri fail in their bid to sign him, they have lined up Torino’s Alessio Cerci as a Plan B.

The 24-year-old is under contract at Olympique Marseille until June 2015 but has been highly tipped to leave the Stade Velodrome.

Ayew scored two goals at the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil despite Ghana’s early elimination.

He had a quiet campaign last term due to injury and managed 25 Ligue 1 appearances with six goals in return. 0
