Medeama midfielder Michael Helegbe believes the side can make history by clinching the CAF Confederations Cup on just their first attempt.

The Yellow and Mauves are just two games away from making it through to the group stage of the competition where they face Congolese club AC Leopards.

Medeama are only making their debut African campaign by virtue of their success in last season’s MTN FA Cup.

The Tarkwa-based club have however impressed and are the only surviving Ghanaian club in African club competition this season.

Helegbe who only joined the club in the second half of the season believes the side can go on to make history for the club and Ghana football.

“This is the first time Medeama is taking part in the Confederation Cup, and as a player and as a group; our aim is to achieve history for the club and nation,” he said.

“We are working very hard, and it has been showing in our games.

“We are two games away from groups stage now, and I believe our focus and aim is still on course.

“As a player, you need to win a trophy for the club; yes we do talk about the Confederation Cup, and our aim is to work very hard and be in the group stage.”

Rashid Sumaila in action for Mamelodi Sundowns

Ghana defender Rashid Sumaila came on as a second half substitute to help Mamelodi Sundowns to a crucial 1-0 win at Moroka Swallows on Saturday.

The vital win extends the lead of the Brazilians at the top of the South African top flight with main title rivals Kaizer Chiefs having two games in hand.

Sumaila came on at the start of the second half to replace Alje Schut in the game played in Johannesburg.

The Black Stars contributed his bid to a resolute defensive performance in the second half to ensure the three points were safe for Pitso Mosimane’s side.

Sundowns have now stretched their lead to 61 points but have played two games more than closest contenders Kaizer Chiefs who are on 55 points with just two games left.

This means Sundowns remain in the driving seat for the championship which will go all the way to the final game of the season.

Razak Brimah has been a consistent performer for Cordoba

Ghana goalkeeper Razak Brimah kept a clean sheet while helping Cordoba to another vital win in the Spanish third tier.

Goals from Fran Serrano and Damian handed the Caliphs a 2-0 win away to Lucena which pushes them further away from the relegation zone.

Brimah has started each and every single game for Cordoba since his arrival in January from bankrupt CD Guadalajara.

The 26-year-old has managed to help the side’s revival as they remain consistent with their improvement from their then precarious position in the league.

Jose Antonio Romero’s side were second from bottom at the time of Brimah’s arrival but have now climbed to 11th with just three games to end the season.

The ex Nania FC goalkeeper hopes to catch the eye of Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah with his consistent displays in order to be selected into the Black Stars squad for the 2014 World Cup.

Midfielder Michael Helgbe is determined to bury his painful experience in Africa by powering Medeama SC to the group stage of the CAF Confederations Cup.

The 28-year-old was part of the Liberty Professionals squad that crashed out at the same stage of the competition by Sudanese club Al Hilal in 2004.

The Ghana international’s quality and worth of experience has proved curial for the Yellow and Mauves in their debut campaign in CAF Champions League.

Medeama must now get pass Congolese club AC Leopards to further their fairy tale story in the competition.

Their playmaker however had the added incentive of banishing his heartache in the competition suffered when he was with Liberty Professionals.

“Those days {at Liberty} were very good days; we tried our best to get to the groups stage but we were knocked out,” he said.

“It was hard for us. At the moment, my attention and focus is on Medeama, and I believe strongly that I have been working hard towards that.

“I am going to work hard to ensure the team qualifies for the money zone.

“Before coming to Medeama, I knew the task was going to be very hard.

“And they participating in Africa for the first time, I knew the challenge was going to be tough but my focus was to do my best.

“Because everybody looks at you; so for me as a player I needed to do my best. My colleagues think the same, too.”

Medeama will be hoping to record a positive result when they face AC Leopards in the first leg of the final qualifier in the CAF Confederations Cup on Sunday.

Asante Kotoko’s league triumph put on hold

Asante Kotoko slumped to their seventh defeat of the season with a 1-0 loss to in-form Inter Allies on Saturday.

The champions had to play their official home match at the Accra Sports Stadium due to a temporal ban.

Kotoko failed to pull 13 points clear at the top of the table after being undone by a late strike by Abdul Fatawu Safiu with a well-taken free kick.

The win sees the in-form Inter Allies climb up to 8th in the Ghanaian top flight – four points adrift the relegation zone.

Kotoko will maintain their position at the summit of the league with the remaining Week 26 fixtures to be played on Sunday.

Ebusua Dwarfs defeated Heart of Lions

Ebusua Dwarfs boosted their survival chances with a comfortable 4-1 win over second-placed Heart of Lions on Saturday despite remaining in the relegation zone.

The Cape-Coast based side were quick to come out of their blocks and shot ahead on 22 seconds through Joseph Esso.

But the credit went to striker Richard Gadze who made a lethal run down the left flank of the visitors and laid a pass for Esso who sublimely tucked home for the opener.

Gadze registered his name on the scoresheet when he smashed in a rebound after goalkeeper Mozart Adjetey failed to grab Isaac Kwain’s powerful free-kick on 22 minutes.

But the hardworking striker had to rushed to the hospital mid-way through the first half when he sustained an injury from a disallowed goal scored.

Lions looked tamed and could not trouble the home team who comfortably defended well and mount attacks.

The second half got underway with Lions improved but could not unlock the Dwarfs steal backline.

Dwarfs were on the attack again and Joseph Esso earned a penalty when Mohammed Razir whacked him down inside the box.

Striker Frederick Boateng converted the spot-kick in the 71st minute when he drilled a low one past goalkeeper Adjetey.

Lions reduced the deficit on 83 minutes when substitute Edem Kodzo also scored from the spot after Isaac Osae was fouled inside the area by Joshua Oninku.

But Dwarfs was not content and snatched the fourth goal through Boateng who curled in a free-kick in the 89th minute for his second game of the match.

Ghanaian youth attacker Emmanuel Gyasi was named on the Torino bench in their entertaining 3-3 draw with SS Lazio in the Italian Serie A on Saturday afternoon.

It was the 20-year-old prolific scorer’s third appearance in Torino’s team for a Serie A game but sat on the bench as the Maroons staged a strong ability to hold Lazio to a 3-3 draw at their own backyard.

Gyasi, whose impressive scoring form in the Primavera league has earned him praise and recognition from Italy’s U21 coach after captaining the Torino U20 side to TIM Cup success last season, was on the Torino bench against Cagliari and Inter Milan.

The youngster holds Ghanaian, Italian and German passports but as things stand now, it is only the Italians who have declared plans to cap him at youth level.

Ghana midfielder Afriyie Acquah lost his starting berth in Parma’s team as he was dropped to the bench in their 2-0 home reverse against Inter Milan in the Serie A on Saturday afternoon.

This comes as disappointment for both the midfielder and Arsenal who had reportedly sent their senior scout to assess the Essien-like midfielder to see if he is worth of a summer transfer.

But there was no show for the Ghanaian and the English side would have to bid their time to see the Ghanaian play. However, it could also a decision by Parma manager Roberto Donaldoni who has plans to retaining Acquah in his squad for next season as they look set to securing a Europa League action.

The 22-year-old had been enjoying regular playing time under manager Roberto Donadoni but was dropped to the bench as they faced Inter Milan at the Stadio Ennio Tardini.

Parma were hoping to maintain their two-game unbeaten run in the Serie A but a three-game losing streak recorded against Juventus, AS Roma and Napoli.

But were handed a painful loss at their own backyard as Antonio Cassano missed a spot-kick while Gianluca Paletta also got sent off as Inter coasted to a comfortable away victory.

Acquah, who is tipped to make Ghana’s provisional World Cup squad following his consistency in the Italian top-flight, has managed 23 games this season, starting 14 and completing just 7 of them.
