Ghana have been dealt a massive blow ahead of the qualifiers for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations after defender Jerry Akaminko was ruled out until the end of the season, GHANAsoccernet.com can exclusively reveal.

The Eskisehirspor guardsman has traveled to London to see a specialist after he exacerbated an ankle injury he suffered since June last year.

The Ghanaian international was on a comeback trail until he suffered the setback, forcing the Turkish side to send him to England for special treatment.

Akaminko has endured a difficult spell on the sidelines after he suffered the career- threatening injury while on international duty with Ghana.

He landed awkwardly on his ankle during an international friendly against the Netherlands in June last year which conspired against his involvement in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and the 2015 Nations Cup in Equatorial Guinea.

He was initially expected to be out for three months but his recovery has been slow.

The Turkish side confirmed on Thursday that the strong centre-back will miss the rest of the season.

“Akaminko’s season has ended. He is currently in London for treatment,” Eskisehirspor health director Abrahama Eldem said

“He had a big injury and has not recovered yet.”

The former Heart of Lions man looks set to be on the sidelines for more than year as he remains a major doubt for Ghana ahead of the qualifiers for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
