Kwesi Appiah says he is on good terms with the Ayews

Ex Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has dismissed a rift between him and the Ayews with reports flying the influential Andre had a hand in his dismissal.

The 54-year-old insists he has always been on good terms with the star football family despite unsavoury comments made by Abedi Pele following the axing of his sons for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

The rift between Appiah and the Ayews has been traced to the manner in which he was stripped off Ghana’s captaincy which was handed to Abedi Pele for the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations.

There are even rumours Andre Ayew had a hand in Appiah’s sacking as coach of the Black Stars following a series of perceived bust ups with the Olympique Marseille star.

But the ex Asante Kotoko star says at no point in time has he fallen out with the Ayews.

"We [Abedi Pele and Kwesi Appiah] were two young kids in the national team in 1981/82 so we were close,” Appiah revealed on Metro TV's Good Evening Ghana show.

“We slept together, in the same room and we've been good friends since. I was in Kumasi and whenever he is going to Tamale he will come see me before going.

"Even when I was in London he [Abedi Pele] always called me, the kids [Abedi Pele’s children] they call me daddy. I have known them since their birth.

"He [Abedi Pele] was not the one took the captain's band from me, even though I know every player will aspire to captain their national team, it wasn't him who took the decision.

"It was the national team bosses who decided that we were going to Senegal and that I couldn't speak French which Abedi could and therefore they made him the captain.

“It wasn't his fault and it has not affected our friendship.”
