Zamalek have requested to meet their former icon Emmanuel Quarshie in Accra ahead of their CAF Champions League opener against Berekum Chelsea.

Quarshie, a former Ghana captain, joined the cairo based side in 1983 and was an instant hit.

Zamalek Board Member Amr Al Ganainy told Sunyani-based Storm FM: "As we play Chelsea in Accra we want to remember Quarshie who was loved by everybody at Zamalek because he was good player."

"Before coming to Ghana, I called him to meet us at the airport and hotel but we didn't know he was very sick."

The ex-Ghana captain is battling a life threatening throat cancer (Laryngeal cancer) for over a year now.

A club statement on the official Zamalek website confirmed the news by saying:

"The Zamalek delegation in Ghana has asked about the team icon Emmanuel Quarshie to pay a legendary visit to the teams camp as motivation.

"Quarshie is one of the best African players who has played for the club and we think the fans still remember him for his good football."

Quarshie skippered the Black Stars to win their last Africa Cup of Nations trophy.
